About The Position

The Manager, Transfusion Services is responsible for the development, coordination, implementation, and standardization of all policies, procedures, and practices within the Blood Bank operations at Cape Cod Healthcare’s laboratories. This role oversees all related operations of the Blood Donor Center/Program, continuously seeking to market and expand services, increase collections, and decrease dependency on purchased blood. The manager supervises the performance of procedures for obtaining and providing data and blood products for patient diagnosis and treatment, including blood typing, antibody screening, crossmatching, preparation and dispensing of blood products, and serologic testing. They ensure adherence to quality control and instrument calibration policies, assist with instrument troubleshooting and maintenance, and oversee the accurate transcription of test data. The position involves planning, organizing, and providing services for assigned sections, including employee scheduling, supply and equipment management, and monitoring quality control activities. The manager is responsible for all aspects of blood donation, including marketing, donor recruitment, and oversight of off-site and mobile collections. They maintain technical competency to assist staff, perform phlebotomy, prepare blood components, recruit donors, manage inventory, and implement process improvements. This role also involves orienting and training new hires, evaluating staff performance, serving as a technical reference, and developing quality control, assurance, and improvement programs. The manager must maintain a thorough understanding of CAP, AABB, and FDA standards, ensure HIPAA compliance, and foster harmonious relationships with staff, medical personnel, patients, and guests. Professional growth and development are maintained through approved seminars and affiliations. The manager performs other related duties, ensures customer satisfaction, participates in the Quality Assurance program, provides input to budgets, interviews applicants, develops communication with staff and physicians, conducts monthly staff meetings, and maintains section reports and records. They are expected to challenge current working practices, identify process improvement opportunities, and actively participate in the organization’s culture of continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in clinical laboratory sciences area or related field
  • ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification
  • 5 years of related experience, preferably in a blood center
  • Knowledge of Regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Excellent organizational skills, the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively, analyze problems and implement appropriate solutions, and assimilate information quickly
  • Ability to work independently while developing functioning teams among staff
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to deal with all levels of staff, hospital personnel, physicians, volunteers and donors
  • Required to travel to Donor sites throughout the region
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Responsibilities

  • Assures the development, coordination, implementation and standardization of all policies, procedures, and practices of all Blood Bank operations at Cape Cod Healthcare’s laboratories.
  • Provides services to meet all Cape Cod Healthcare patient needs in accordance with accepted standards and practices.
  • Oversees all related operations of the Blood Donor Center/Program.
  • Continually seeks means of marketing and expanding services.
  • Continuously increases collections by growing internal database as well as external drives or mobile collections.
  • Explores means of decreasing dependency on purchased blood from outside sources thereby decreasing costs.
  • Supervises the performance of procedures to obtain and provide data and blood products for use in patient diagnosis and treatment including but not limited to: procedures necessary to assure compatible blood for patients (e.g. blood typing, antibody screening and identification, crossmatching, etc.).
  • Oversees the preparation and dispensing of blood products for transfusion.
  • Oversees the performance of serologic testing for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
  • Keeps current with and follows all Q.C. and instrument calibration policies and procedure.
  • Helps perform instrument troubleshooting as necessary and preventive maintenance as scheduled as necessitated.
  • Oversees the accurate transcription of completed test data for reporting.
  • Plans, organizes and provides services for assigned sections of the Blood Bank and Donor Center.
  • Create and maintain employee scheduling in accordance with contract language.
  • Orders and controls supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Coordinates and monitors quality control activities to ensure that standards and procedures are followed and recorded.
  • Evaluates quality of work performed for accuracy and timely reporting of test results.
  • Responsible for all aspects of blood donation, including marketing and donor recruitment.
  • Responsible for oversight, set-up and maintaining fixed off site and mobile collections.
  • Responsible to provide Blood Bank and Serology testing for CCH.
  • Maintains technical competency in the donor center to assist staff as needed.
  • Obtains health histories and physical exams.
  • Phlebotomizes patient and donors.
  • Prepares and labels blood components and samples for testing.
  • Accurately transcribes test data and other clerical functions.
  • Recruits donors i.e. autologous and homologous.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Performs donor related clerical functions.
  • Makes recommendations and implements process improvement measures for quality and/or efficiency.
  • Assists pathologists in maintaining programs including but not limited to: quality control, instrument maintenance, quality assurance and improvement and new methodologies development.
  • Reviews all donor paperwork for accuracy and completeness.
  • Orients new hires and oversees training of all staff and evaluates work performance, according to the guidelines established for the department to determine employee competence.
  • Serves as a technical reference in for blood bank, donor room and hospital staff.
  • Recommends, develops, and maintains Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Quality Improvement programs.
  • Maintains thorough understanding of CAP, AABB and FDA standards to ensure operational compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential in conjunction with CCH HIPAA regulations.
  • Maintains harmonious and cooperative relations with fellow employees, medical staff, patients and guests and serves effectively as part of the Laboratory team in performing professional service to patients.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through approved seminars workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and Hospital policies and procedures as they pertain to the job, including the fire and disaster plans.
