The Technical Manager is accountable for planning and oversight of department staff activities related to patient care, ensuring customer satisfaction and adherence to fiscal budget, policies, procedures, standards, and regulations. They work collaboratively with others at all levels of the organization to create an environment of excellence, trust, and continual learning. Must be informed and maintain generalist sleep and EEG technical skill proficiency/competency in all aspects of technical responsibilities. Scope of responsibility will include oversight of a disease specific or patient population management program in multiple Departments and/or a high degree of patient complexity and/or multiple locations, with executive management approval.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare or related field
  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists or equivalent
  • CPR/BLS certifications through American Heart Association
  • 5+ years of experience in a sleep lab setting
  • 5+ years of supervisory/management experience
  • Proven solid computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use equipment and related supplies for a selected patient population (IE. Sleep Medicine Population)
  • Demonstrated ability to use mechanical devices, such as those used at Sleep Diagnostic Lab/Center, O2 administration

  • Master’s degree in healthcare or related field
  • 5+ years of experience as a Lead Technician in a sleep environment.
  • Experience with ENT and Pediatric population; performing EEG studies

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction for the clinic: Solicits technical input and takes a leadership role in organizational-wide strategic planning activities. Participates and provides leadership on appropriate interdisciplinary committees within the organization that focus on patient care issues. Conducts technical staff meetings for problem identification, resolution, information sharing and education. Mentors technical staff. Identifies, plans, and implements educational opportunities for staff. Technically supports activities at other locations as requested through site visit, telephone consultation, and work groups.
  • Promotes effective delivery of competent patient care: Collaborates with clinical educators to develop and evaluate educational needs of the technical staff, related to the patient population served. Verifies that new staff has completed general orientation and Sleep Center orientation. Verifies annual updates of all staff in BLS, Environmental Health and Safety, and Infection Control and area specific requirements. Manages, develops, and evaluates personnel, and guides technical performance by identifying strengths and weaknesses. Clarifies for staff their responsibilities and accountabilities as described in the AASM guidelines, job performance expectations, and organizational policies and procedures. Incorporates national specialty standards, regulatory agency standards to support Sleep Center technical practice.
  • Promotes delivery of compassionate care: Develops and sustains a caring environment by role modeling positive verbal and non-verbal behaviors. Establishes behavioral expectations for all technical personnel that promote positive patient and peer relations. Monitors patient satisfaction through survey results and develops individual and group process improvement plans to effect improved scores. Supports patient teaching activities as a key technical priority so that patients and families are supported to meet mutually agreed-upon educational needs. Works to resolve patient complaints related to providers, technical or administrative staff. Performs any duties which are needed to promote patient satisfaction, improve patient care and facilitate Sleep Center functioning.
  • Ensures delivery of safe, efficient care: Identifies and utilizes resources to address perceived problems in: patient education resources, staff education needs, resources availability, patient transition problems, financial data, multidisciplinary team functioning, and patient and family expectations. Addresses infection control data to determine effect on complications and initiates controls within the environment to decrease/stabilize this factor. Validates with managing physicians that care provided to patients is consistent with evidence-based practice and best practices. Collaborates with various ancillary services to assure appropriate supplies, equipment, laundry, and computer related issues and items are always available to the Sleep Center and satellites for smooth, efficient patient care delivery.
  • Adheres to resources/cost containment/budgetary guidelines. Recommends, monitors, and maintains an annual maintenance and operations budget: Establishes staffing patterns that reflect appropriate use of budgeted positions as that overtime is reserved for unexpected increases in patient load, acuity, or unpredictable staff fluctuations. Uses data to predict daily staffing needs, assess productivity, predict changes in budgetary requirements, and monitor leave time. Determines needed changes in staffing levels to improve Sleep Center productivity. Communicates budget parameters working with technical staff and Clinic Administrators to address problem areas to prevent lost revenue. Remains knowledgeable of human and fiscal resource management with an ongoing awareness of healthcare policies and economics. Submits expenditure justifications to direct report as requested
  • Maintains Sleep Center compliance with organizational, professional, regulatory and government standards of care: Develops, plans, and implements changes needed within the Sleep Center to promote compliance with regulatory standards. Implements accreditation standards as they are related to Sleep Center operations through planning and interventions designed to meet them within specified time frames. Takes a lead role in maintaining accreditation from AAAHC and AASM.
  • Implements quality improvement and risk management programs: Ensures that quality improvement program is developed, initiated, maintained, and evaluated on an ongoing basis. Conducts environmental rounds at the Sleep Center and satellites on a routine basis. Acts upon results of environmental rounds with the various Sleep and EEG locations to improve patient care/work areas and to meet patient safety standards. Confers with clinic Risk Management in situations when clinic or employee liability may be an issue. Provides appropriate Midas Reporting Reviews reports on technical errors, unusual occurrences and develop, implement, and evaluate a plan to promote quality improvement in problem areas. Works with purchasing Department to develop routine in-services for proper usage, tagging for repair, cleaning and servicing of commonly used and specialized equipment in the clinic. Participate on projects or committees, as appropriate. Develop, implement and report on Sleep Center process/quality improvement programs that adhere to standardized PI/QI reporting format as assigned
  • Assumes responsibility for remaining current on job-related knowledge and skills: Maintains certification requirements. Stays current with national specialty standards and promotes professionalism in sleep medicine through participation in professional organizations and /or utilization of the literature.
  • Emergency Response: Develop clinic Emergency Response Plan and Emergency Preparedness Plan in collaboration with the Clinic Administrator and Managing Physician/Dept Chief. Provide technical leadership on Code Blue Teams and Code Orange Teams Conducts emergency drills as prescribe in policy
  • Establishes, maintains, and monitors the oversight of Technical Initiatives and Functions throughout the Sleep Center: Ensures design and format of Sleep Study reports Maintains medical/sleep equipment and monitors Evaluates sleep study reports and compliance documents prepared by staff scorers for quality assurance Develops policies, procedures, and reporting forms related to current and future Sleep Center programs. Prepares accreditation documentation and is responsible for timely submission. Makes said documents available for review by regulatory agencies and/or accreditation agencies Collaborates with physicians, leadership, and other departments when new Sleep Center and EEG programs are established.
