About The Position

The System Control Centre is the brain behind moving energy from generation and transmission through the distribution system where it is needed. The Manager is responsible for leading a large, 24/7, unionized operations team to ensure the safe and effective delivery of the EPC electrical grid by ensuring compliance with all applicable procedures, systems and training. The electricity industry is accelerating changes to meet the challenges of significant load growth and diversified renewable power sources across the grid. The Manager, System Control Centre is critical for positioning the team to meet the expectations of growth over the coming energy transformation by using new processes and tools to manage the changes as a foundation for modern capabilities that will grow with customer and business needs.

Requirements

  • 10 years of Utility Industry experience with strong technical knowledge in electrical utility systems operation & control and associated employees in this functional area.
  • Proficient in transmission, distribution and network systems management and design
  • Knowledgeable in state-of-the-art systems applicable to system control i.e. Outage Management, Distribution Management, Smart Grid, Advanced Distribution Management System, Energy Management System, Distributed Energy Resource Management System etc.
  • Knowledgeable of transmission, distribution and network system assets
  • Sound knowledge in high voltage standards, Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Alberta Electric Utility Code.
  • Must be legal to work in Canada and requires the successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Two pieces of valid Government issued ID will be required.
  • Two professional references will be requested.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer, PLT or PSE considered an asset.
  • Able to obtain and maintain required NERC certification considered an asset.
  • Incident Command System trained through 300 considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power system 24/7/365, ensuring continuous service delivery while proactively managing system conditions, constraints, and emerging risks.
  • Lead a strong, engaged workforce by fostering an inclusive, safety-first culture, acting as a visible change leader, and driving retention, development, and long-term capability of a high-functioning team.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels and succession planning to sustain continuous operations, ensuring readiness to meet the demands of a critical, around-the-clock control centre environment.
  • Embed human performance principles and disciplined operations while representing System Operations as a voting member on the ENMAX Safety Council, reinforcing enterprise-wide safety leadership.
  • Ensure System Control Operators are fully trained, qualified, and supported, including accountability for NERC certification compliance and the delivery of comprehensive training programs for new and existing operators.
  • Lead the response to system disturbances and operational events, aligning cross-functional teams to stabilize the system, restore service efficiently, and communicate with clarity and confidence.
  • Drive operational readiness through planning, contingency development, and advanced simulation exercises to strengthen resilience against complex and high-impact events.
  • Partner closely with Field Services, System Operations, and Asset Performance teams to ensure strong alignment, coordination, and seamless execution between the control centre and field operations.
  • Maintain full compliance with Alberta Reliability Standards and applicable policies by developing, implementing, and continuously improving control centre processes, standards, and risk mitigation practices.
  • Establish, monitor, and report on key performance metrics, delivering optimal results through disciplined performance management, monthly and annual reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, reliability, quality, and safety.
  • Guide the evolution of control centre capabilities through modernization, application rationalization, and the integration of advanced systems, automation, and analytics.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine the System Control Centre business plan, ensuring alignment with System Operations and broader organizational priorities.
  • Oversee a significant operating budget and support capital initiatives, ensuring disciplined financial management and alignment of investments to operational priorities and system performance.
