About The Position

This is a temporary position through October 31, 2027. The Manager, SVSU Independent Testing Laboratory will work with the Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (SE&T Dean) to plan and oversee the administrative functions of the laboratory, perform testing and other contract work for clients, and supervise student and non-student assistants in carrying out the ITL’s functions.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or related field
A demonstrated record of potential for progressive laboratory management.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software quickly.
Experience and ability to positively interact with all members of the campus community.
Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Nice To Haves

Reasonable knowledge of university policies and good laboratory practices is desirable.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the day-to-day operational activities of the laboratory.
Develop and implement good laboratory practices.
Develop and implement good accounting procedures for test sample flow through the laboratory and billing of hours against purchase orders.
Perform liaison with users to ensure timely response to needs.
Prepare work schedules, assign testing duties, and coordinate training of new student assistants.
Order laboratory supplies, plan for new equipment acquisition and monitor budget expenditures.
Interview and recommend employment of student assistants.
Maintain laboratory equipment in good order.
Operate ITL in a manner ensuring cost and revenue targets are reached.
Develop and implement marketing strategies to increase the number of ITL customers.
Prepare for and attain various lab accreditation/certification requirements as determined by the Dean.
Work closely with other on-campus entities to further develop industry and business relationships.
Personally perform material property tests and other laboratory work for clients.
Work in close conjunction with the faculty and staff of the science and engineering departments to retain students who are trained in a variety of laboratory techniques.
Perform other duties as assigned.
