About The Position

We are seeking a manager of surface and safety awareness at our mining facilities in Brookwood, Alabama. We expect this person to be a role model for the "Warrior Way" and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork. The Manager of Surface and Safety Awareness is responsible for developing, coordinating, and directing all safety and health initiatives related to surface coal operations, including coal preparation plants, loadouts, overland conveyors, and associated support facilities. This position ensures compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and corporate standards and provides leadership to drive continuous improvement in safety culture and performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Mine Engineering, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 4 years of safety experience in surface coal or mining operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of 30 CFR and OSHA 29 CFR.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multi-site safety programs and manage compliance initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in incident investigation techniques and root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Why, TapRoot).

Responsibilities

  • Lead Warrior’s Safety Awareness Program
  • Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) investigations and facilitate corrective actions for all accidents investigation to include coordinating RCA efforts and tracking of follow-up.
  • Sends out alerts, fatal grams, and near-miss information from Industry – share with all stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with Security, Director of Safety, and VP of Safety regarding any Security Issues across sites.
  • Develop and maintain standardized access control procedures for all sites (mines, prep plants, barge loadouts, gas operations).
  • Oversee compliance of Surface Facilities to include spot checks and tracking of Safety Department visit SAFER Walks.
  • Conduct regular audits, inspections, and safety assessments of plants, overland belts, and surface facilities.
  • Develop and implement standardized safety procedures and training programs specific to surface operations.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to identify design or process changes that enhance safety.
  • Serve as the corporate point of contact for MSHA and state agencies regarding surface safety matters, citations, and plan reviews.
  • Support corporate initiatives such as risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and emergency response readiness.
  • Oversee contractor safety compliance with site-specific requirements and compliance with Warrior standards.
  • Provide mentorship and training to site-level safety coordinators and supervisors.
  • Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.
