Manager, Supply Chain Risk Engineering

Johnson Controls•New Freedom, PA
•$110,000 - $140,000•Onsite

About The Position

Johnson Controls is establishing a Supply Chain Risk Engineering team within Chillers North America. This hands-on working manager will build and lead a small team of electrical and mechanical engineers while personally conducting technical work. The team's mission is to establish qualified alternate sources for existing chiller components with strained supply chains and to respond quickly to sudden material shortages so disruptions do not stop factory production or customer shipments. The Manager partners with Procurement, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality, product teams, factories, and Chiller Engineering groups to identify at-risk component categories, understand their use and demand across the chiller portfolio, and define and execute alternate-component qualification plans. The role delivers approved alternates ready for production, either through direct implementation or handoff to product teams. Direct implementation may include engineering changes, BOM and configuration updates, factory effectivity coordination, and commercial source activation. The role also leads expedited evaluations or engineering deviations during shortages, with risk controls and follow-up full qualification where appropriate. The team focuses on components already in production on chillers; multi-sourcing for new designs remains the responsibility of development teams. The Manager establishes the team's operating model, standard work, priorities, and metrics, and regularly reports status and risk to engineering and supply chain leadership. The position is onsite, as indicated by the job posting tag.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least 8 years of engineering experience in product, component, sustaining, or supplier engineering for complex mechanical or electromechanical equipment; HVAC, refrigeration, or industrial capital equipment experience is preferred.
  • At least 2 years leading engineers or technical teams, formally or as a project or team lead.
  • Demonstrated experience qualifying alternate components or suppliers, including writing test and qualification plans, running or directing testing, and documenting results.
  • Working knowledge of engineering change processes (ECN/CCB), BOM management, part-number lifecycle, and effectivity in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with SAP or an equivalent ERP system for BOM and where-used analysis, and with a PLM system for controlled engineering documents.
  • Familiarity with agency and code requirements for purchased components, such as UL, CSA, CE, and ASME.
  • Ability to influence Procurement, Quality, and product engineering teams without direct authority.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort presenting to engineering and supply chain leadership.
  • Hands-on willingness to personally lead qualifications and technical reviews, in addition to managing the team.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with components and systems used in chillers, such as fans and motors, pumps, breakers and power distribution, VFDs, controls, heat exchangers, or valves.
  • Experience in supplier engineering, component engineering, or strategic sourcing engineering.
  • Knowledge of PPAP, first article inspection, supplier quality, and FMEA.
  • Familiarity with Johnson Controls engineering governance, including ECN/CCB, P-status lifecycle, KMAT/variant configuration, and Windchill/PLM.
  • Experience running or using a test laboratory for component and in-unit validation.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, given close work with the Monterrey and San Antonio factories.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a small team of electrical and mechanical engineers; hire, develop, assign work, and coach team members.
  • Personally lead component qualifications and technical reviews as a working manager.
  • Partner with Procurement and Supply Chain to identify component categories with supply risk, including sole sources, unstable lead times, capacity constraints, quality escapes, geopolitical or tariff exposure, and pending obsolescence.
  • Build and maintain a prioritized risk register ranked by supply risk and business impact.
  • Advise Procurement on supplier technical capability and the engineering effort required to qualify candidate suppliers.
  • Map strained components to their uses across chiller models, configurations, options, and factories, and translate those applications into technical requirements for alternates.
  • Author formal qualification plans defining requirements, analysis, testing, documentation, and approvals.
  • Lead qualification execution, including engineering analysis, supplier technical reviews, sample and first article evaluation, bench and laboratory testing, and in-unit testing at the JADEC test lab or a factory.
  • Coordinate with Supplier Quality and Procurement on supplier PPAP, first article inspection, and supplier quality requirements.
  • Document qualification results and disposition alternates as approved, approved with conditions, or rejected.
  • Ensure alternates are ready for production by creating part numbers, releasing drawings and specifications, and maintaining approved manufacturer information in SAP and PLM.
  • Agree with product teams on implementation paths for qualified alternates and implement directly where appropriate.
  • Author ECNs through CCB, update BOMs and KMAT/variant structures, and coordinate factory effectivity when implementing alternates directly.
  • Coordinate with Procurement to activate new sources commercially after engineering release.
  • Respond as the engineering point of contact when sudden material shortages threaten factory output; assess impact with Procurement, Planning, and factories.
  • Identify candidate alternate components or suppliers during shortages, evaluate form, fit, function, and compliance, and recommend an acceptable path to maintain production.
  • Execute expedited qualifications or engineering deviations with defined risk controls and a plan for subsequent full qualification.
  • Feed shortage lessons into the risk register to identify recurring categories for proactive multi-source work.
  • Define the team's operating model, standard work, priorities, and metrics, including categories de-risked, qualification status, cycle time, and parts released for multi-source use.
  • Report status and risk regularly to engineering and supply chain leadership.

Benefits

  • Competitive bonus plan based on individual, group, and corporate performance.
  • Competitive benefits package.
