About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU] The Manager, Standards leads the development and continuous improvement of transmission & substation engineering standards, specifications, and procedures that guide the safe and efficient design and construction of the company’s high‑voltage transmission system. This role ensures that all standards reflect industry best practices, regulatory requirements, consideration for emerging technologies, and the company’s long‑term asset management strategy. This position can be based in Greensburg, PA or Akron, OH. This position will oversee a team of supervisors, subject‑matter experts, and engineers to develop safe, repeatable, and efficient standards and procedures for FirstEnergy transmission lines and substation facilities. It requires someone who can collaborate effectively with various internal departments including internal and external engineering, transmission and distribution leadership, construction, maintenance, supply chain, and asset management, and will serve as a key technical authority for transmission line and substation design criteria.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one of the states served by FirstEnergy.
  • 10+ years of experience in transmission line or substation engineering and 5+ years of prior supervisor or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of NESC, IEEE, ASCE, ACI, ASTM, ANSI and other applicable regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and applying engineering standards.
  • Proven leadership or team‑management experience.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Foresight and general construction aptitude.
  • Ability to represent FirstEnergy in industry standards bodies (IEEE, CIGRE, EPRI, etc.).
  • Familiarity with utility asset management practices and capital project delivery.
  • Experience working directly with engineering consultants and material vendors.

Nice To Haves

  • EHV project design and standards experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with transmission line design software such as PLS‑CADD, PLS‑Pole, PLS‑Tower, or substation design software such as Substation Design Suite: Physical and Substation Design Suite: Protection & Control.
  • Experience representing the company in legal proceedings associated with transmission line or substation development approvals and/or providing expert witness testimony is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Foster a high-performing safety culture where employees own, promote, and reinforce safe behaviors and implement safety by design as part of standards development.
  • Ensure construction standards support a safe environment for transmission lines and substations personnel, contractors, and the public by incorporating safety by design principles.
  • Oversee the teams that develop and maintain engineering standards, specifications, and procedures for transmission lines (34.5 kV–765 kV) and all substations.
  • Ensure standards align with NESC, NERC, FERC, IEEE, ASCE, state regulatory, and other industry standards as required.
  • Lead periodic reviews to incorporate new technologies, materials, and construction methods.
  • Establish governance processes for approving, publishing, and communicating standards to drive efficiency, reduce errors, and allow decision-making at the team level.
  • Serve as the company’s technical authority for transmission line structures, foundations, conductors, insulation, protection, grounding, and substation equipment.
  • Provide guidance to project teams on applying standards to capital and maintenance projects.
  • Review complex engineering designs and deviations from standards.
  • Ensure cradle to grave oversight of a non-conformance process including identification, analysis, documentation, and action for resolution which includes acquiring all stakeholder approvals.
  • Lead and mentor a team of supervisors, engineers and technical specialists.
  • Partner with Transmission/Distribution Planning, Operations, Construction, Supply Chain, Maintenance, and Asset Management to ensure standards are safe, support system reliability, and cost‑effective design.
  • Represent and/or support team members representing the company in industry working groups and standards committees.
  • Promote strong fact-based decision making along with balancing the needs of the diverse regions across the FirstEnergy footprint.
  • Ability to act as an effective mediator of competing opinions from across FirstEnergy as standards are developed.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies such as advanced conductors, digital substations, and condition‑monitoring systems.
  • Drive standardization initiatives that reduce cost, improve reliability & resiliency, allow traceability, and streamline project execution.
  • Support lessons‑learned programs and integrate field feedback into standards.
  • Ensure regular knowledge transfer to design teams and other uses of the team’s work products.
