About The Position

As a Software Engineering Manager at Indeed, you will manage and grow a team responsible for building and maintaining software systems that enable high-quality product experiences at scale. You’ll focus on creating an environment where engineers can do their best work by providing clear direction, removing obstacles, and supporting technical and professional growth. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other business partners to translate business needs into executable technical plans. You’ll balance people leadership with technical context, helping guide decision-making while empowering the team to take ownership of solutions. You’ll also contribute to longer-term planning, ensuring the team delivers reliable outcomes while evolving its systems and practices over time.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and a minimum of 8 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of experience; or a PhD with a minimum of 3 years experience
  • Proven experience delivering large-scale initiatives that span multiple teams while establishing effective engineering practices and processes.
  • Experience with modern software development technologies and architectures (e.g., service-oriented systems, APIs, web or backend frameworks).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with data-intensive systems or applied machine learning is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Own the team’s delivery roadmap, aligning priorities with product and business goals.
  • Partner with engineering peers, product managers, UX, and program management to define and execute a clear long-term strategy.
  • Mentor and support engineers at varying stages of their careers, from new hires to senior contributors.
  • Create conditions that enable the team to self-organize, maintain predictable delivery, and sustain healthy velocity.
  • Raise the technical bar by setting clear expectations around quality, processes, and engineering best practices.
  • Support technical problem-solving by encouraging pragmatic decisions and thoughtful trade-off discussions.
