Manager, Software Engineering

ZelisBoston, MA
$139,000 - $176,700Hybrid

About The Position

The Manager, Software Engineering leads the engineering team behind the Cost Engine. A core API and backend service that standardizes and serves healthcare procedure cost, negotiated rate, member, eligibility, benefit, treatment, provider, and incentive data to downstream products. This is a player-coach role. You will spend a meaningful share of your time writing and reviewing code alongside your engineers, and the remainder leading, developing, and unblocking the team. You own both the technical health of the platform and the growth of the people building it. You partner closely with the Product Managers, scrum masters, and architecture for member cost and transparency to turn the roadmap into shipped, reliable software.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with strong, current hands-on coding ability — this role writes and reviews code, it does not only manage. (Typically a Bachelor's + 8 years or a Master's + 6)
  • People leadership experience - managing, coaching, and developing engineers, including performance and growth conversations.
  • Depth in C# / .NET building and operating production REST APIs and backend services.
  • Experience with relational data stores (SQL Server and/or PostgreSQL) and cloud-hosted services on AWS.
  • Comfort operating in an Agile environment, sprints, PI planning, and commitment-based delivery, partnering with a Scrum Masters and Product Managers.
  • Ability to lead across a hybrid legacy-and-modern codebase, make sound architectural tradeoffs, and manage run-vs-change alongside security and reliability commitments.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare IT experience, especially member cost, claims, benefits, or price-transparency data (e.g., X12 EDI 270/271 and 837, No Surprises Act, Transparency in Coverage).
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems, service decomposition, ETL modernization, or migrations such as cache or secrets-management changes.
  • Familiarity with Rust, distributed caching (Redis/Valkey), messaging (SQS/RabbitMQ), and observability tooling (Datadog, OpenTelemetry).
  • Working knowledge of healthcare data privacy and security concepts (PHI/PII).
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence for delivery and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage, coach, and develop the team through regular 1:1s, feedback, and career-growth conversations.
  • Own hiring, promotion input, and pay and performance decisions for your team, in line with company practice.
  • Set technical direction in partnership with architecture, and create an environment where engineers do their best work.
  • Write and review production code across the .NET 8 REST APIs, C# services, and the ETL and data-movement estate. This is a hands-on role, not management-only.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards, raising the bar on code quality, testing, and observability.
  • Take on the complex and higher-risk technical work directly, from architecture decisions to thorny production issues and cross-cutting migrations.
  • Partner with the Scrum Master to run agile ceremonies and keep delivery predictable across planning cycles.
  • Translate the product roadmap into sequenced, well-scoped engineering work; manage dependencies, surface risks early, and remove blockers.
  • Balance run-vs-change, keeping the platform healthy (security, reliability, and maintenance work) while still moving the roadmap forward.
  • Guide the platform's modernization: clearer service boundaries, ETL modernization in Rust, stronger observability, and legacy endpoint deprecation.
  • Contribute to the longer-term roadmap for the platform's technical health, and use AI strategically to boost the team's productivity.
  • Communicate progress, delivery risk, tradeoffs, and decisions clearly to engineering leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with the Product Manager for member cost and transparency to turn strategy into shipped, reliable software.
