About The Position

The Manager of the Rayner Dairy Research and Teaching Facility on the Animal and Poultry Science Farm is responsible for the operational management and support of the facility. Reporting to the Department Head, the Manager will oversee and participate in daily operations, working alongside staff. This role involves collaborating with the Department Head and Faculty Advisor to provide overall direction for the unit. Key collaborations include faculty, staff, graduate students, and various internal and external university units such as Facilities, Enterprise Procurement, Safety Resources, ConnectionPoint, WCB Support, UACC, CFRC, and vendors for supplies, equipment, feed, services, and animal/waste sales. The Manager may also be involved in outreach and engagement activities with the dairy industry. The position requires working two to three shifts per week, including evenings and weekends, and being available for urgent after-hours matters.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of experience relevant to this position.
  • Experience with dairy cattle production.
  • Experience safely operating equipment and machinery, and equipment maintenance in a dairy barn.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office software and computer systems.
  • Proficiency using record keeping and data evaluation software relevant to the dairy industry (DairyComp, DelPro, In-Touch).
  • A good understanding of Canadian Council of Animal Care guidelines.
  • A good understanding of health, safety, and environment protocols.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent team leadership and team building skills.
  • Ability to communicate in a timely manner and relate effectively with faculty, research scientists, students, colleagues, and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • A BSc. Degree in Animal Science is preferred but a combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Ability to conduct outreach and engagement activities with the dairy industry is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in day-to-day operations of the facility, working alongside staff.
  • Provide overall direction for the unit in collaboration with the Department Head and Faculty Advisor.
  • Liaise with faculty, staff, graduate students, and internal/external university units and vendors.
  • Facilitate outreach and engagement activities with the dairy industry.
  • Recruit, train, coach, and monitor staff performance.
  • Manage staff scheduling and overtime approval.
  • Lead staff meetings and facilitate communication.
  • Develop and implement supervisory controls for employee relations.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Assess and review budgets, revenue, and expenses for cost-effectiveness.
  • Approve purchases in consultation with the Department Head.
  • Assess needs and implement/revise management protocols for facility operation, animal care, production, and maintenance.
  • Assess equipment and facility for maintenance, coordinating service and repairs.
  • Track feed inventory, order feed, and coordinate shipments.
  • Participate in dairy silage cropping activities.
  • Coordinate liquid waste removal.
  • Participate in herd health activities and lead the breeding program.
  • Participate in nutrition group activities.
  • Understand experimental design and ensure proper experimental protocols are followed.
  • Review and approve research Animal Use Protocols (AUPs).
  • Ensure compliance with dairy industry regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure meticulous record keeping.
  • Collaborate with research staff to implement facility and research protocols.
  • Participate in unit manager team meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Ensure practices adhere to Canadian Council of Animal Care and industry standards (e.g., ProAction).
  • Manage risk in negotiations with vendors and suppliers.
  • Identify, assess, and manage risk in planning and operations.

Benefits

  • The salary range, based on 1.0 FTE, is $69,035.00 - 107,868.00 per annum.
  • The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
