About The Position

The Manager Production oversees and coordinates the activities of a more complex production line at Caterpillar’s Large Engine Center in Lafayette, Indiana. The role prepares schedules, resolves production issues, and ensures adherence to safety and quality standards. The Large Power Systems Division designs and manufactures large diesel and natural gas engines, powertrains, and engine systems. The Lafayette Engine Center manufactures Cat 3500, Cat 3600, and C175 engines. The position monitors and improves shop-floor safety, ensures production requirements are met through appropriate fixtures, tooling, and methods, and coordinates workload and priorities with production management. It supports efficient, timely, cost-conscious production while maintaining product quality. The manager also oversees materials availability, staff training and development, timekeeping, work assignments, staffing estimates, and completion dates. The position is onsite five days a week, may require up to 5% travel, and offers domestic relocation assistance.

Requirements

Degree or equivalent experience desired.
Working knowledge of problem solving, including identifying and documenting problems, considering stakeholder perspectives, assessing alternatives, evaluating risks and benefits, and using fact-finding or diagnostic tools.
Basic understanding of data gathering and analysis tools, techniques, and objectives.
Working knowledge of performance management, including identifying development opportunities, providing objective feedback, and contributing input to performance reviews.
Basic understanding of analytical thinking and tools used to determine root causes and develop solutions.
Working knowledge of decision-making and critical-thinking processes, including organizing relevant information, prioritizing concerns, and assessing alternatives and risks.
Working knowledge of planning and organizing tasks and resources, monitoring progress, and addressing bottlenecks or competing priorities.
Working knowledge of effective written and oral communication, feedback, listening, and interpretation of communication cues.
Basic understanding of accuracy and attention to detail, including procedures for preventing errors.

Responsibilities

Monitor and improve shop-floor safety, eliminate unsafe operations, and maintain a safe and clean product environment.
Determine processing needs and ensure fixtures, tooling, and methods are available to meet schedules and production requirements.
Coordinate daily with production management to designate workload, priorities, and work sequence.
Determine overtime needs, set priorities when resources are insufficient, and decide when disciplinary action is necessary.
Recommend changes to working conditions and equipment use to increase efficiency.
Improve processes and timeliness, reduce costs, and eliminate non-value-added activities.
Ensure products meet quality requirements and Caterpillar’s Quality Policy while maintaining cost.
Ensure parts and materials are ordered and distributed efficiently and on time.
Implement initiatives such as 5S, Lean Manufacturing, 6 Sigma, and CQMS/ISO certification.
Train and develop staff, manage timekeeping, estimate personnel needs, assign work, meet completion dates, and ensure consistent application of organizational needs.
Follow established standards, policies, and practices relating to quality, cost reduction, safety, ergonomics, affirmative action, and other assigned duties.
Perform other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management.
