About The Position

Responsible for overseeing daily clinical and operational activities for the assigned Surgical Services Perioperative Nursing Units. Requires frequent application of management principles to the perioperative discipline. Must be capable of independent judgment and decision-making in budget, personnel, patient services, and administrative or professional programs. Maintains twenty-four (24) hour accountability and coordinates communications, training, operations, and administrative activities for the perioperative cost centers. Acts as a clinical resource for the Pre-Surgical Assessment unit, Chart Management Office, and Pre-Testing units.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in perioperative nursing.
  • At least two (2) years of supervisory, managerial, or other responsible nursing experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years clinical experience in Pre-Op, PACU, or ERU.
  • ACLS or specialty certification.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees effective management of perioperative services through assigned department coordinator(s).
  • Evaluates daily care delivery activities and implements operational changes to improve service levels.
  • Collaborates with Director to develop departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Develops and maintains perioperative systems, techniques, and procedures for efficient patient throughput.
  • Actively participates on hospital committees addressing operational issues.
  • Develops processes to measure and report unit productivity and efficiency.
  • Ensures supply and equipment needs are met by coordinating purchasing activities.
  • Approves all non-stock supply purchases and manages the supply expense budget.
  • Develops and submits capital and operating budgets for approval and is accountable for budget objectives.
  • Participates in cost containment activities.
  • Evaluates equipment and supplies for safety and cost-effectiveness.
  • Analyzes product and service offerings and identifies alternative contract proposals.
  • Determines human resource needs and develops programs to improve quality and efficiency.
  • Recruits, hires, orients, and evaluates performance of supervisors/coordinators and other assigned personnel.
  • Develops and administers a master staffing plan using ANSOS Program.
  • Identifies and plans for educational and training needs of departmental staff.
  • Ensures operational compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  • Collaborates to develop, administer, and monitor the departmental Quality Improvement plan.
  • Communicates and coordinates with departments and services daily to manage operational activities.
  • Advises Director of systems problems impacting operations.
  • Maintains medical staff communication by interacting with the Anesthesia Department and responding to physician issues.
  • Communicates regularly with departmental staff to disseminate information and foster understanding of hospital-wide performance.
  • Resolves conflicts and issues using professional judgment in applying policies and procedures.
  • Maintains continuous feedback processes within the Surgical Services Management Team.
  • Integrates departmental services with the hospital’s primary functions and strategic goals.
  • Coordinates and integrates services within the department and with other departments.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to guide and support service provision.
  • Recommends sufficient qualified personnel to provide care.
  • Determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel.
  • Continuously assesses and improves departmental performance.
  • Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  • Provides orientation, in-service training, and continuing education with assistance.
  • Recommends technical equipment, maintenance needs, space requirements, and other resources.
  • Participates in selecting outside sources for needed services.
  • Contributes to the development of the philosophy, goals, objectives, and policies/procedures.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning for surgical services.
  • Demonstrates effective role modeling and mentorship to surgical service personnel.
  • Serves as a departmental or institutional representative and consults to outside agencies.
  • Evaluates research findings related to perioperative nursing and participates in research initiatives.
  • Demonstrates service excellence behaviors routinely in encounters with all customers.
  • Practices proper safety techniques and reports mechanical/electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or injuries/accidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
