About The Position

This is a full-time position with 24/7 accountability for a 24-bed Oncology Medical nursing department and a 24-bed surgical care nursing department. The role involves planning, management, implementation, and evaluation of operations and services to ensure quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. It also includes budget preparation and administration, staff selection, development, motivation, and evaluation, and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. The position also requires personal and professional growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in short and long term planning and analyzes/plans for the needs of the area.
  • Establishes staffing requirements, maintains productivity as budgeted, and plans for the appropriate utilization of human resources.
  • Monitors quality of patient care and patient engagement, and oversees implementation of measures to improve both.
  • Facilitates care delivery in conjunction with the patient focused model.
  • Supports and facilitates care management practice in conjunction with Advocate Sherman protocols.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to assure effective and efficient operations consistent with Advocate Sherman philosophy, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency standards (federal, state, city, IDPH) and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Promotes patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives.
  • Develops and incorporates Performance Improvement projects.
  • Ensures that standards of practice are developed, implemented, and evaluated in conjunction with monitoring and evaluation activities within the area.
  • Conducts special projects and studies related to area activities, goals, or objectives.
  • Assumes 24-hour responsibility for assigned areas of operation and divisional coverage as necessary.
  • Plans and administers an annual budget, monitors budgetary expenditures, and reports/justifies variances.
  • Assures efficient utilization of supplies and identifies inventory levels and costs.
  • Develops new and expanding program proposals with cost/budget implications.
  • Completes forecasting for upcoming and long-term budgets.
  • Develops major equipment purchase proposals.
  • Recruits, selects, mentors, and motivates direct reports to achieve departmental, professional, and personal goals and objectives.
  • Ensures that all staff are evaluated and performance reviews are completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates recruitment activities and facilitates peer interview process.
  • Facilitates and promotes retention strategies.
  • Assesses educational needs of the staff and facilitates education opportunities.
  • Assists individuals with identifying professional goals and provides opportunities to achieve them.
  • Ensures an adequate orientation program for staff.
  • Implements and coordinates disciplinary procedures.
  • Monitors and facilitates the resolution of performance and/or other employee relations issues.
  • Facilitates staff meetings relating to unit, divisional, hospital, and corporate activities.
  • Collaborates with physicians, leadership, and other healthcare professionals to assure delivery of quality care, patient engagements, and continual use of area service.
  • Actively participates in and leads hospital committees and projects (PI projects, hospital projects, etc.).
  • Networks with peers to assure that administrative and clinical standards integrate with department and hospital services.
  • Networks with professionals at other healthcare facilities for clinical standards.
  • Coordinates activities with various other hospital departments to ensure patient engagement as well as cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintains knowledge of current standards of care via literature, educational events, internal and external resources, and internal/external networking.
  • Maintains memberships in professional and community organizations.
  • Participates in activities to enhance professional growth by involvement in professional organizations and continuing education.
