About The Position

University Health Network (UHN) is seeking an experienced and transformative leader for the key role of Manager of Professional Practice. This temporary assignment is aligned with Altum, Laboratory Medicine, Medical Imaging, and the Discipline Head structure, and may evolve with departmental or UHN changes. The Manager of Professional Practice (MPP), as part of UHN’s Collaborative Academic Practice (CAP) portfolio and under the direction of the Director of Professional Practice (DPP), is responsible for academic clinical practice in accordance with UHN’s Purpose, Values, and Principles. This role is crucial for aligning work within and across clinical programs, sites, and organizational practice priorities, focusing on the integration of care, patient safety, quality, and the use of technology to support care, teaching, and research.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree completion.
  • Current registration and in good standing with a Regulatory Health Professions College or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 8 years of practical and related experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining professional practice standards and quality control measures in a healthcare environment.
  • Skilled in program evaluation and leveraging data analytics.
  • Consulting, influencing, and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to think strategically at the global organizational level, as well as at the program, site, unit, and individual levels.
  • Broad knowledge of overall hospital structure, operating policies, and decision-making processes.
  • Knowledge of the Regulated Health Professions Act, standards of professional practice, and codes of ethics, health care consent, and ethical implications of care delivery, as well as evolving scopes of practice.
  • Knowledge of health record information systems and various software applications.
  • Broad understanding of the health care system, related issues and trends, policies, and legislation provincially, nationally, and internationally.
  • Excellent knowledge of quality improvement principles and practices.
  • Excellent problem recognition, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

  • Cross appointment with a UHN affiliated College or University preferred.
  • Project Management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead service and program and select corporate initiatives based on current and evolving patient care and practice standards.
  • Develop and implement policies and practice guidance related to care provision and organization-wide healthcare delivery model changes that advance UHN's foundational value of Patient Centered Care and its mission.
  • Develop and motivate a cohesive team and assist in identifying and supporting educational strategies to enhance staff knowledge regarding professional practice and patient care.
  • Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of profession-specific and interprofessional practice standards at the program level and across UHN, medical directive and order set/tool development, as well as performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification.
  • Collaborate with other site DPPs, MPPs, and practice and operations leaders to ensure practice standards are aligned and integrated across programs and organization-wide.
  • Supervise a number of professionals, including Advanced Practice Nurse Educators (APNEs) and Discipline Heads (with either solid or dotted line reporting).
  • Establish, maintain, and lead quality improvement initiatives, working closely with the DPP and other practice and operational colleagues to promote a vision of practice excellence, integrating practice-based education, point-of-care research capacity, and a data-driven approach within and across UHN programs, hospitals, and the external community.
  • Mentorship of diverse staff and learners.
  • Actively engage in organization-wide initiatives, particularly the optimization of UHN’s health information system.
  • Interpret, communicate, and disseminate research findings to support patient care and recommend evidence-based policy and practice changes.
