About The Position

Interstate Waste Services (IWS) is seeking an experienced Operations Manager (Landfill) to lead and drive facets of the landfill operations. This role involves developing and executing strategies to support and maximize performance, including asset planning, long-term objective planning, safety, productivity, environmental management, financial performance, and employee retention. The position reports to and supports the Vice President of Operations (Landfill). IWS is a progressive and innovative provider of solid waste and recycling services in the greater New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut markets, with a rail-served landfill in Ohio. The company is committed to delivering high-quality waste, recycling, and environmental services while prioritizing safety. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the waste industry
  • At least 5 years of experience managing teams
  • Knowledge of finance and accounting practices, financial analysis, and reporting
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment

Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations specific to their assigned areas of the landfill and provide daily support to Supervisors in ensuring quality and budget performance.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of the facilities operating plan, consistent with the accomplishment of long range established objectives which will enhance effectiveness and delineate responsibilities and authority.
  • Assist in the development of facility budget in a timely manner, forecasting financial and human resource needs for future time periods.
  • Assist others in budget optimization; provides budget compliance support.
  • Help oversee personnel needs of the facility including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance, as well as providing input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Organize and schedule all necessary resources required to accomplish activities.
  • Ensure thorough root cause investigations for all injuries and incidents, following up with consistent discipline and retraining as needed while working congruently with Safety through the entirety of the process.
  • Engage suppliers in problem solving and participate in supplier improvement processes.
  • Implement and maintain programs to improve the safety, productivity, and profitability of the facility and ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT)/Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and other Federal and State regulations.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
  • Ensures strict compliance with all health and safety rules and state regulations.
  • Ensure safety processes and procedures are up to date.
  • Responsible for leading and supervising direct reports in cooperation with the Vice President of Landfill, evaluating performance and delivering feedback.
  • Oversees needs of the department, including selecting, coaching, and training employees and evaluating employee performance.
  • Develops measures to motivate employees to encourage upward growth and increased responsibility.
  • Focuses on succession planning and assuring a strong depth within the team.
