About The Position

As the Manager of Environmental and Safety at SMS-group, you’ll play a key leadership role in driving environmental, health, and safety initiatives across the enterprise. This position is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive EHS programs, ensuring compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements, and fostering a culture of safety and sustainability. You’ll provide strategic direction and support to safety professionals at the regional Service Centers as well as their Plant Management teams. The role will involve providing leadership oversight of all training efforts; review, revision, development and continuous enhancement of EHS training policies, programs, curricula, courses, and competency verification checklists. These elements must align with internal standards, regulatory & customer requirements, and industry best practices

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA) in Occupational Safety or related field from four-year college or university and two years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of overall professional experience in management and/or related discipline
  • Experience with development, management of safety systems across multiple locations in various states
  • Project management skills required to keep projects on target
  • Must be able to travel throughout the US and Canada up to 50%

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure the safety of every employee and compliance with corporate policies and regulatory requirements for multiple sites across North America
  • Create and implement frameworks for conducting regular safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations to identify hazards and implement corrective actions
  • Provide EHS training and guidance to employees at all levels, promoting a strong safety culture and continuous improvement
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and other applicable standards
  • Oversee and review record keeping of safety incidents, inspections, and compliance activities
  • Manage the workers’ compensation program by overseeing claims, implementing preventive measures, coordinating return-to-work programs, and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Partner with operations, engineering, and leadership teams to integrate EHS considerations into business decisions and drive sustainable practices
  • Direct and evaluate third party activities
  • Develop and oversee strategies for organizational learning that promote continual improvement in EHS performance
  • Create and implement frameworks for effective learning from incidents, everyday work experiences, and other EHS-related events
  • Standardize a uniform investigation methodology and deploy it across the business
  • Utilize findings from investigations to drive organizational learning and reduce risk
  • Lead a team of EHS Program Managers at all sites in North America, overseeing project execution, supporting incident investigations, and tracking corrective actions through to completion
  • Drive a culture of continuous learning and safety by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to build strong relationships and foster EHS compliance
