Under the supervision of the Chief Operations Officer, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) works collaboratively with all departments to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs, policies, and procedures that protect staff, guests, animals, and the environment. Through strong leadership, the Director drives continuous improvement, conducts risk assessments, and ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations. By fostering a safe, inclusive, and sustainable environment, the Director of EHS directly supports the mission and vision of Fresno’s Chaffee Zoo Corporation (FCZC). The pay range for this position $82,000.00 - $119,999.00 per year. Offers will be based on the successful candidate's experience.

  • Develop and oversee the organization’s Safety Management System (SMS) to ensure a systematic approach to managing safety risks.
  • Leads the safety and security team and plays a critical role in shaping a proactive safety culture across the organization and ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
  • Develop and communicate the zoo’s safety goals and initiatives to all levels of the organization.
  • Serves as the chairperson for the zoo-wide safety council.
  • Drives continuous improvement in safety performance by identifying key objectives and developing strategies to achieve them.
  • Designs, implements, and manages comprehensive safety programs to prevent workplace accidents and injuries in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Conducts risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards. Responsible for performing ergonomic assessment for employees and ensure recommendations are followed through.
  • Develops incident response plans for emergencies, accidents, and environmental incidents.
  • Develops and implements a complete security system to ensure the safety and security of the buildings, grounds, and all assets within the Zoo, including key control and access to Zoo grounds. Ensure preventative maintenance and repair and replacement of surveillance cameras, two-way radios, locks, and key systems.
  • Reviews all safety and security-related incidents and near-misses using root cause analysis and implements corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Responsible for viewing and providing surveillance videos when needed or requested.
  • Serves as the primary strategic liaison with City of Fresno Parks Management, local law enforcement, fire, emergency response agencies, and external agencies.
  • Evaluates and updates the Zoo’s fire protection plans.
  • Oversees compliance programs in accordance with the California Employee Right to Know Act and the hazardous communication standards.
  • Collaborates with all Zoo staff to maintain a safe, effective, and economical program in the handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and waste, ensuring that such program meets or exceeds applicable Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Coordinates hazard assessments, including periodic inspections when new, previously unidentified hazards are recognized, when occupational injuries and illnesses occur, whenever workplace conditions warrant, and when new substances, processes, procedures, or equipment are introduced to the workplace.
  • Develops and implements an ongoing Zoo safety training program to ensure the health and safety of employees and minimize employee workers’ compensation risk.
  • Conduct high-level audits for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Association for Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and review operational audits conducted by the EHS Manager.
  • Oversees and participates in the Zoo’s Lethal Response Program and ensures that the Armed Weapons Team members have adequate practice sessions/recertifications with local instructors at designated shooting ranges and on the FCZC campus.
  • Establishes the annual strategic drill schedule and compliance standards meeting the requirements of AZA. Evaluates the performance of drills as executed.
  • Expected to deal calmly and authoritatively with the public and work under considerable pressure in crowds and with difficult individuals.
  • Maintains employee confidence and protects the organization by ensuring personnel data and all other employment-related documents and information are secured. Handles confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Prepares the Safety and Security Department for annual budgets in a timely manner, as well as implements and monitors the budget throughout the year.
  • Oversees the selection and training of all parties involved in the Incident Command System.
  • Safely operate a vehicle for business purposes, including but not limited to going to and from the zoo’s facilities and offsite.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support team and organizational goals.

  • Manages payroll timekeeping for direct reports and oversees the implementation of wage and hour regulations for direct reports.
  • Accountable for ensuring all direct reports submit any required training, documents, or other deliverables on time.
  • Willingly engages the team and other Zoo staff and proves to be an inspirational leader. Actively create connections that encourage open and honest communication with all.
  • Remains accessible to the Zoo staff by cell phone. Uses professional courtesy and only call/texts on day off in the event of an emergency.
  • Provides regular performance feedback to reporting staff. Completes timely and appropriate written evaluations that highlight strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational, Industrial or Public Safety, Public or Environmental Health, or related field highly preferred.
  • Minimum five years’ work experience in security, industrial or occupational safety, or public or environmental health required.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) Certification required.
  • Minimum of four years leading and training teams of eight (8) or more direct reports required, preferably within a public environment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED), or First Aid certification required or will be certified within three months of employment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' previous work experience using Microsoft Office suite is required.
  • A valid California driver's license, valid vehicle insurance, enrolled in the CA Employer Pull Notice program and successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program required.
  • Valid OSHA 30 Hour General or Construction certification required.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills required.
  • Minimum of three years' experience using surveillance and video systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with firearms is preferred.
  • Hazardous Materials certification required.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
