About The Position

The Manager, Network & Hardware Services, is responsible for the day-to-day operational leadership of the Network & Hardware Services team within Technology's Infrastructure, Platforms, and Support (IPS) organization. This role oversees the availability, resiliency, and performance of CAS's compute and data networking platforms—capabilities that enable the curation, connection, and analysis of the world's published scientific information. Guided by established IPS processes and practices, this manager focuses on implementing department plans, driving team execution, and supporting operational excellence across the infrastructure foundation that serves CAS's global customer base. Reports to the Senior Director of Technology IPS.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in planning, provisioning, and maintaining enterprise-class IT infrastructure (compute, network, storage, structured/unstructured cabling, etc.). In-depth experience in one or more types of infrastructure systems is desired.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a lead or supervisor position with responsibility for guiding technical staff in delivering availability, reliability, and performance of enterprise-class data center equipment.
  • Operational knowledge of enterprise data center environments, including space, power, and HVAC considerations.
  • Ability to manage budgets and spending plans; experience justifying and executing acquisitions of enterprise hardware, software, and tech services.
  • Experience in product and service procurement, vendor management, and providing financial project estimates.
  • Strong communication, relationship building, and interpersonal skills; able to gain cooperation of others and conduct presentations on technical topics.
  • Ability to analyze situations or data, identify problems, understand implications, and develop solutions that support department initiatives.
  • Working knowledge of AI and machine learning infrastructure requirements, including GPU/accelerated compute environments and high-performance networking fabrics; AIOps tool exposure is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects involving cross-functional teams, managing delivery within established timelines and budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day output of the Network & Hardware Services team, ensuring availability, performance, and reliability of compute and network infrastructure in alignment with established functional area processes.
  • Implements department and functional area plans for compute, network, and infrastructure services that support mission-critical scientific information products.
  • Identifies opportunities for business process improvements within the team's scope, escalating broader infrastructure modernization opportunities to senior leadership.
  • Monitors team performance and takes action to address issues, applying sound judgment when analyzing situations that require review of relevant factors.
  • Supports the incorporation of AI and machine learning infrastructure requirements into operational plans, ensuring compute, networking, and storage environments can support CAS's expanding AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Provides direction to the Network & Hardware Services team according to established policies and management guidance.
  • Responsible for people management actions including hiring, performance management, coaching, development, and termination.
  • Builds a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Supports workforce planning and recruitment activities for the team.
  • Influences cross‑functional partners and senior stakeholders to advance priorities, secure alignment, and deliver results.
  • Ensures the team’s work aligns with evolving business priorities, compliance needs, and operational best practices.
  • Applies a degree of interpretation and judgment when making decisions, using prior experience to identify the most appropriate options or improve existing approaches.
  • Takes a comprehensive approach to identifying problems, understanding implications, and creating solutions that support department initiatives and objectives.
  • Uses forecasted information and predictive analysis to assess impact on infrastructure capacity, resource needs, and operational planning within the team's scope.
  • Advise on shaping technology policies, standards, and governance approaches that strengthen enterprise infrastructure capabilities.
  • Executes CAS's enterprise hosting strategy across on-premises private cloud, public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), and hybrid models, following established governance principles.
  • Supports the operation of CAS's private cloud environment, ensuring it delivers the agility, self-service capabilities, and reliability required for mission-critical systems.
  • Partners with application and platform teams implement cloud standards for connectivity, cost management, and security posture in alignment with established frameworks.
  • Contributes to total cost of ownership analysis across hosting models, providing data-driven inputs to support leadership recommendations.
  • Contributes to budget planning for the Network & Hardware Services area; may serve as a sub-departmental budget holder.
  • Monitors and manages operating expenses, vendor costs, and resource utilization to ensure financial stewardship within own work area and that of the team.
  • Manages requests and sourcing of vendors for hardware and software procurement to support business needs; ensures payment requests are processed.
  • Recommends investments in tools, hardware, and platforms that advance department objectives.
  • Leads the development and implementation of projects that impact the Network & Hardware Services functional area, typically involving a limited number of sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Identifies opportunities for business process improvements within project scope that enhance efficiency, scalability, and service reliability.
  • Ensures project outcomes support infrastructure operational standards and departmental goals.
  • Provisions and manages infrastructure supporting AI and machine learning workloads, including GPU compute clusters, high-speed network fabric, and high-throughput storage environments.
  • Supports the evaluation and adoption of AIOps platforms and AI-driven tools for network monitoring, predictive maintenance, and anomaly detection.
  • Partners with data science, application development, and research teams to address AI compute and networking requirements within the team's operational scope.
  • Stays current on AI-optimized hardware trends and contributes to evaluation efforts to determine fit within the CAS environment.
