About The Position

This role leads, directs, and reviews the work of Engineers and Technicians in a laboratory setting. It requires knowledge of chemistry (organic, polymer, inorganic) and analytical test methods. The position involves communicating internally and externally to explain and gain cooperation on policies and practices, and making improvements to processes, systems, and solutions. The role plans and establishes goals and objectives with short-term impacts on operational goals. It requires experience leading and managing projects, processes, and employees. The position performs a variety of duties in the mechanical and chemistry areas of the laboratory, including constructing, troubleshooting, calibrating, adjusting, testing, and maintaining laboratory test instrumentation. Work is performed from specifications, operating manuals, and written material test instructions. The role involves working with complex test instrumentation and computer systems, operating related test instrumentation, conducting routine and complex testing, and reporting data in a prescribed format.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science and minimum 9 years of prior related experience, including working knowledge of a chemistry lab.
  • Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
  • In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, direct, and review the work of Engineers and Technicians.
  • Provide input on hiring, firing, promotion, and compensation decisions.
  • Establish goals and objectives.
  • Improve processes to enhance performance and efficiency of the work area.
  • Develops justifications and business cases for capital equipment to improve and/or maintain lab capability and capacity.
  • Reviews submitted test data for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Approves test reports for distribution and recommends further testing when warranted.
  • Reviews and submit lab documentation (test and calibration procedures).
  • Work with lab instrumentation such as FTIR, Instrons, DSC, Microtracs, titrators, & HPLC.
