About The Position

The Laboratory Services Information System Manager monitors, maintains, updates, trains, and coordinates all aspects of the Lab Information System (LIS) to ensure efficient and optimal operations at all times. This role acts as a liaison for all LIS and HIS:LIS-related issues, interacting with Laboratory Staff, Hospital Departments/Nursing Units, and internal and external Information System personnel. The position requires an understanding of the interactive relationship between LIS and other systems such as PowerChart, Cerner AP and CP, Kronos, PBAR, and Master Control. The role also helps ensure CAP, CLIA, MC, and CDM compliance.

Requirements

  • BS or BA degree in a related field
  • 5 years Experience in an acute care facility setting
  • 3 years In a Laboratory Information System Analyst capacity
  • 1 year Prior supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with CAP and CLIA LIS regulations
  • Familiar with good management of human resources techniques and rules
  • Organization/time management skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning and evaluation skills
  • Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) - If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

Responsibilities

  • Monitor all aspects of the daily LIS operations and assign tasks to LIS Team members, monitoring their progress and conducting annual evaluations.
  • Address and resolve computer-related problems/issues presented by lab and non-laboratory personnel.
  • Assist the Department Director in formulating LIS goals consistent with Departmental Goals and Objectives.
  • Keep the Charge Data Master and other billing functions accurate and up to date.
  • Work with the Order Communications Coordinator to disseminate information regarding the use and capabilities of the Cerner System to relevant hospital personnel.
  • Assist lab personnel in gathering data from the Information System for reports, QA data, statistics, and other essential informational material.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, and critical results and take appropriate action, considering patient age.
  • Utilize knowledge of clerical and computer functions to meet the needs of the Department and hospital staff.
  • Communicate and interact effectively with co-workers and guests.
  • Adhere to established Hospital and Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through Continuing Education sessions and active participation in the Department’s Quality Assurance program.
  • Instruct, orient, and complete orientation checklists for new lab and LIS employees, communicate day-to-day operations, and review implemented changes with staff.
  • Evaluate new technical procedures and ensure their accuracy and implementation in the LIS section.
  • Provide input for annual Performance Appraisal reviews for staff rotating in the section, and assist in commendations, counseling, interviews, and selection of employees.
  • Assist the Department in meeting accreditation requirements by licensing agencies.
  • Coordinate and integrate department services on intradepartmental, interdepartmental, and hospital-wide levels.
  • Plan for provision of service through qualified competent staff, ensuring policies and procedures support the scope of service.
  • Establish and maintain performance improvement and quality control activities.
  • Provide for orientation, training, and continuing education of staff.
  • Monitor space/resource requirements and utilization of outside resources.
  • Ensure results are available within defined TAT guidelines from the LIS perspective.
  • Adhere to Safety / Infection Control guidelines using personal protective equipment as required.
  • Willingness to take on new tasks and additional responsibilities.
  • Display flexibility to cover the lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Maintain an English speaking environment in all work areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
