Manager in Training Metals
About The Position
The Manager in Training - Metals is a hands-on development role for people who want to grow into operations leadership. Reporting to the Recycling Operations Regional General Manager, Recycling Operations General Manager, or Recycling Operations Director, this role rotates through key parts of the business, including safety, environmental, operations, commercial, logistics, maintenance, purchasing, and finance. The program helps the trainee learn how the business works, support daily operations, work with people, serve customers and suppliers, manage costs, and improve results. This is an active, field-based opportunity for someone who wants to learn, lead, and make a visible impact. Through coaching, job shadowing, field assignments, business reviews, check-ins, and stretch assignments, the trainee will learn safe work practices, material flow, scale and inspection work, shredder and recovery operations, maintenance, transportation, commercial basics, business results, communication, and accountability. This role helps prepare future leaders by combining classroom-style learning, field experience, coaching, and real work. The trainee will learn how the metals recycling business creates value, how strong leaders keep people safe, and how daily decisions affect service, quality, cost, profit, and team success. The Leadership Development Journey includes learning the business, leading the business, and owning the business.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required for training, field exposure, and business needs.
- Ability to learn and follow safety, environmental, operational, commercial, financial, approval, and documentation expectations in an active industrial environment.
- Strong communication, math, organization, follow-through, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work under deadline pressure, analyze information, use sound judgment, and communicate professionally with employees, customers, suppliers, peers, and leaders.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb, traverse uneven surfaces, and work safely around active industrial operations.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally; use hands for writing, keyboarding, and documentation; visually inspect materials and review data; and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically.
Nice To Haves
- One or more years of scrap, manufacturing, metals recycling, or related industrial experience; or three to five years of experience in a heavy industrial environment.
- Working knowledge of fabrication, tools, maintenance equipment, equipment parts, repair practices, or production environments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn business systems, reporting tools, and operational documentation requirements.
- Ability to review operational, technical, and financial information and recommend practical actions that improve safety, service, productivity, cost, quality, or profit.
Responsibilities
- Learn and follow Radius Recycling safety and environmental expectations.
- Help identify hazards, prevent incidents, report concerns, support corrective actions, and protect employees, customers, suppliers, visitors, company property, and the community.
- Work with operations teams to learn daily routines, material flow, scale and inspection work, facility operations, production needs, staffing coordination, equipment use, shipment readiness, and problem solving.
- Learn how buying, selling, freight, processing costs, material quality, supplier relationships, customer service, and market conditions affect business decisions and profit.
- Learn how maintenance keeps operations safe, reliable, and cost-effective through preventive maintenance, downtime response, work orders, vendor support, documentation, and clear communication with operations leaders.
- Understand how inspection, metal identification, production records, inventory reporting, quality control, budgets, forecasts, business reviews, and key measures connect daily decisions to safety, cost, profit, and business performance.
- Take part in coaching, team communication, meetings, check-ins, stretch assignments, and improvement projects that build readiness to lead people, solve problems, keep commitments, and improve results.
- Supports Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better match the business.
- Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
