This team is responsible for compiling, processing, and maintaining patients' medical records. HIMS Technicians will ensure all regulatory requirements of Banner are followed, as well as reconcile medical record activity, maintain records in centralized locations, retrieve charts, and scan, index, and validate records. POSITION SUMMARY This position is responsible for guiding and supporting health information functions and services at designated facility(s) or functional areas within Banner Health. This position will support the achievement of assigned key performance indicators, including data analysis and development of action plans when needed. The role is responsible for successfully managing the operational activities of Health Information Management Services (HIMS), including hiring staff, goal setting and performance measurement, monitoring and measuring staff competencies, assigning work, training staff, and corrective action. This position promotes a collaborative, open, and inclusive work environment within a highly integrated organization on matters related to health information operations. This position may work with facility leadership related to facility-specific issues and opportunities. This position will identify opportunities for workflows to enhance related functions, which will be provided to upline leader(s) for consideration.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must have partially or fully completed the educational requirements towards a degree in health information and certification with the American Health Information Management Association.
  • Must possess three plus years of relevant education/experience in HIM.
  • Requires demonstrated leadership skills and a proficiency level with records management and regulatory requirements in the health information management.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years' experience in HIM/medical records; preferably working with HIM ambulatory workflows.
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Degree in HIT/HIM or other healthcare related program
  • Associate's degree is preferred.
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification in an active status with American Health Information Management Association is strongly preferred.
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a subject matter expert for electronic medical record usage and documentation requirements. This may include other applications used in conjunction with the EMR. Maintains an understanding of applications and technology related to HIMS functions, which result in compliant, efficient and effective processes that have a positive impact on operations.
  • Manages scheduling of staff and monitoring and assignment of workload; monitors productivity and quality of work performed by staff and develops action plans for performance improvement. Assists with development of goals, reviewing goal progress and performing annual assessment with each employee. Responsible for hiring, training and education of new and existing staff. Provides leadership and mentorship to staff for career development.
  • Monitors the compliance of physician and mid-level practitioner documentation within the electronic medical record and/or other corresponding health information management systems. Assist with developing action plans to support more timely, accurate, and complete documentation to support integrity of the EMR.
  • Implements and educates staff on policies and procedures to enforce compliance with federal, state and local regulatory guidelines and minimize risk. Assists with the investigation, follow up, documentation and reporting of HIPAA events and Requests to Amend Medical Records in conjunction with Banner Health policies and procedures.
  • Manages coding support processes to ensure completeness of medical record documentation to support coding and billing of services. Works with providers and leaders to develop and manage work processes that expedite the speed and accuracy of proper documentation.
  • Accountable for departmental budget as it relates to staffing and other direct operating expenses. Works with Regional Director to develop action plans as needed.
