Manager/Director, Project Controls

American Terawatt•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

American Terawatt is hiring a Manager/Director of Project Controls to establish its project controls function and own the schedule of record for every project. The role works closely with Development, Engineering, Commercial, and Procurement, and serves as the controls counterpart to EPC contractors, converter OEMs, owner's engineers, and lenders' independent engineers. It is a hands-on position: the hire will build and maintain schedules and lead a Project Controls Analyst, with the team growing as projects approach construction. The position reports to the Head of Power Development. The role owns the project controls systems, scheduling standards, integrated master schedules, risk register, monthly schedule updates, and integration of OEM and EPC schedules. It also prepares schedule and controls materials for financing and determines when additional planning, scheduling, cost, and risk roles are needed. Early milestones include learning the project roadmap and existing schedule data, standing up the Primavera P6 environment and beginning the lead HVDC project's integrated master schedule, and agreeing on monthly update and risk review cycles. By month six, the role is expected to have monthly-updated baselined schedules for each active project, publish scheduling standards and contractor schedule specifications, and put the two-way P6–Asana link into production with the AI tooling team and a live risk register.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of project controls experience on large energy, transmission, or infrastructure projects.
  • Expert command of Primavera P6, including XER exchange, multiple baselines, cost loading, and forensic delay analysis.
  • Experience reviewing and integrating contractor and OEM schedules.
  • Experience leading project or program controls while continuing to build schedules personally.
  • Clear written communication with executives, lenders, and contractors.

Nice To Haves

  • Owner or developer experience on utility-scale transmission, generation, or HVDC projects.
  • Project controls experience at an EPC such as Kiewit, Quanta, or Burns & McDonnell.
  • Experience supporting project finance diligence with lenders and independent engineers.
  • PMP and/or AACE PSP or DRMP certification.
  • Comfort working in an AI-forward team that automates its reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain each project's integrated master schedule in Oracle Primavera P6, establish scheduling standards and baselines, and approve progress updates received from Asana.
  • Set up and administer the team's Asana workspace, including project templates, task structures, and workflows across project packages.
  • Keep Asana work aligned with P6 schedule activities and ensure owners report progress in Asana so updates can flow back to P6 for approval.
  • Own the risk register by setting the scoring method and risk ownership, and lead the monthly risk review.
  • Run monthly schedule updates, including status assessment, slip analysis, re-forecasting, and approval, then publish approved changes to Asana.
  • Integrate OEM and EPC schedules, review XER files, schedule logic, float, and critical paths, lead owner-side delay analysis, and write the schedule specification contractors must follow.
  • Prepare the schedule and controls package for financing.
  • Determine when the team needs a Senior Planner/Scheduler and a Cost and Risk Analyst.
  • Lead a Project Controls Analyst while continuing to build and maintain schedules directly.
