About The Position

This position is responsible for the management of day-to-day business operations of the Davenport Coffee Lounge within the School of International Service (SIS). This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and improving the quality of service, products, and the physical space of the coffee shop provided to the American University community by the Davenport Coffee Lounge under the supervision of the Senior Manager, Facilities Operations. This position as head supervisor requires initiative, organization and the ability to mediate and guide 35 Federal Work Study (FWS) students. While this job is primarily self-directed, there is some supervision and assistance. This position reports directly to the SIS Senior Manager, Facilities Operations and is responsible for supervising at least 30 FWS students daily during the academic year and 8-12 part-time students during the summer session. This position also serves as the liaison between SIS and the Davenport Coffee Lounge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 2 - 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Prior food service experience.
  • Ability to multitask as well as delegate tasks to employees when necessary.
  • Ability to manage a large staff.
  • Detail-oriented to provide accurate budget reports of the Davenport Lounge's expenses and revenues.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Works well under pressure with a customer service focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Food Certification and prior catering experience (recommended).
  • Prior customer service and managerial experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Davenport Staff: Oversee FWS and PT students, ensure proper hiring, provide necessary information to management and HR, coordinate monthly staff meetings, serve as a liaison between SIS and the Davenport Coffee Lounge, and manage daily operations.
  • Inventory Specialist/Evaluator: Responsible for all weekly and daily inventory duties, monitoring stock, placing stock orders based on inventory needs using a just-in-time system.
  • Facility and Equipment Management: Maintain the Davenport Coffee Lounge space, the Atrium near Davenport, and the café outside, ensuring compliance with DC Department of Health regulations. Care for and maintain machines and appliances including espresso machine, coffee machine, cash register, sinks, ice machine, refrigerators, and CO2 machine.
  • Hiring, Training, and Scheduling of Staff Members: Responsible for hiring, training, and scheduling staff members bi-annually, creating permanent work schedules considering student availability and preferences, and facilitating training sessions.
  • Administration/Bookkeeping Support: Maintain organized records of product invoices, deliver daily cash deposits, send invoices to Accounts Payable, process bi-weekly timesheets, and perform other management duties as assigned.
  • Catering of Meetings, Conferences, and Orientations: Responsible for all catering initiatives for SIS staff and faculty meetings, and other requested events within SIS and EQB buildings, coordinating orders and facilitating arrangements for goods and services.
