About The Position

The Manager, Commodity Tax, will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of Indirect tax affairs, managing tax audits, and ensuring proper monthly tax compliance. This role involves overseeing, reviewing, and assisting with the preparation of indirect tax returns, ensuring accurate and timely filing. The position requires staying current on sales tax changes, analyzing their implications on federal and provincial commodity tax rules, and communicating these to relevant businesses. A key responsibility is managing federal and provincial commodity tax audits, including negotiating and settling disputes. The role also includes training, mentoring, and developing team associates to foster cross-training and career development. Additionally, the Manager will determine the commodity tax implications of transactions to minimize tax costs for the CTC group and its subsidiaries, and interact with external stakeholders such as vendors, customers, and government officials. The position also involves designing and improving processes for operational efficiency, automation, and data accuracy in commodity tax accounting, and participating in special projects for risk mitigation or opportunity realization.

Requirements

  • Completion of Accounting Designation
  • 5+ years working experience in commodity tax
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills to build professional relationships with other finance and business teams across Enterprise
  • Proven ability to solve problems, propose alternatives to resolve issues and identify process improvement opportunities
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage workloads and assigned projects

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of Indirect tax affairs.
  • Manage tax audits and ensure proper monthly tax compliance.
  • Oversee, review, and assist with the preparation of indirect tax returns and ensure it is filed accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Stay current on sales tax changes; analyze the implications of any changes to federal and provincial commodity tax rules, published rulings, interpretations, and court cases, and communicate to the appropriate businesses.
  • Manage federal and provincial commodity tax audits including participation to negotiate and settle audit disputes.
  • Train, mentor, and develop other team associates to encourage cross training, succession, and compelling career paths.
  • Determine federal and provincial commodity tax implications of recurring and unusual transactions with a view to minimizing tax cost to the CTC group and its subsidiaries.
  • Communicate and interact with various outside stakeholders including the vendors, customers (through customer relations) and government officials.
  • Design/Improve processes to achieve operational efficiency and automation as well as data accuracy with respect to the accounting of commodity taxes.
  • Participate in special projects as required and as identified for exposure rectification or realization of opportunities.
