About The Position

The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking a Manager, Camp Operations responsible for managing logistics of Camp Discovery (Camp) including working with other departments, Academy members, volunteer staff, campers and their families, outside vendors and organizations, and Camp partners. The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), founded in 1938, is the largest, most influential, and most representative of all dermatologic associations. A sister organization to the Academy, the American Academy of Dermatology Association is the resource for government affairs, health policy and practice information for dermatologists, and plays a major role in formulating policies that can enhance the quality of dermatologic care. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 6 years of project management experience required.
  • Must possess the highest ethics, tact, judgement and confidentiality regarding campers and volunteers with critical medical issues.
  • Must possess high emotional intelligence and social skill dealing with families and sensitive medical conditions.
  • Consider and respond appropriately to the needs and feelings of others; treat others equitably.
  • Ability to apply effective verbal, non-verbal, and written communication methods.
  • Possess organizational skills and the ability to prioritize assignments. Develop plans to accomplish work objectives or organizational goals. Arrange and assign work resources effectively.
  • Able to think innovatively and apply thoughts to fundamental concepts.
  • Takes prompt action to accomplish objectives with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent word processing and mail merge skills; MS Office knowledge essential and database experience highly desirable. Able to operate standard office equipment, e.g., copiers, fax, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for management of Camp Discovery program and developing initiatives that align with department and overall AAD organizational mission, vision and strategic objectives. Manage team to execute on annual and long term camp discovery program goals.
  • Manage marketing communications for the annual and ongoing Camp Discovery program. This includes working with the Communications department to assist in developing and distributing recruitment materials to Academy members, industry partners, and other organizations, that may differ from year to year, as well as to volunteers and camper families.
  • Manage the logistics (including contract negotiation, camper and volunteer application process, procuring Camp supplies and services, and travel arrangements) for weeks of Camp, including oversight of temporary employees. Work with Academy travel agency to track camper travel arrangements. Work with Camp coordinator to track applications and medical paperwork and conduct background checks on all volunteers to maintain the Camp’s integrity and mitigate the program’s liability. Spearhead efforts to obtain medical malpractice insurance for volunteers. Work with the Academy’s Executive Office, legal, and site partners to negotiate contracts. Also, responsible for the budget in regard to ordering supplies and services and requesting checks for all the necessary payments (e.g., rental facilities, medical supplies, bus and van rentals, etc.).
  • With Senior Manager, Community Impact, serve as the figurehead and face of the Academy for Camp locations. Schedule appropriate staff visits to Camp during the summer, oversee all volunteer staff counselors and medical staff, responsible for the overall safety of the campers and staff. Work with the medical directors to ensure the health of the campers. Be available during the Camp weeks including weekends and evenings, whether onsite or from the AAD office, to troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day issues that may arise with campers and staff.
  • Lead efforts to unify the operations and branding of Camp Discovery by implementing consistent policies, uniform protocols and branding across all camp locations including consistent age ranges for maximum cost savings for travel, elimination of individual Camp location names, etc. Engage medical directors and personnel at all Camps via “all Camp” calls or emails to bring Camp volunteers together to gather feedback and perspective and to explore new ideas.
