Manager, Animal Health Research Operations
About The Position
As part of the Department of Animal Sciences animal operations team, the Animal Health Research Operations Manager collaborates with clinical veterinary staff, research teams, animal operations teams, and regulatory agencies to maintain high standards of animal health, staff safety, and regulatory compliance for animal health and disease research. The successful candidate will foster a collaborative team environment, promoting effective communication, shared accountability, and alignment of operational goals to support animal health and disease research. Reporting to the Director, Animal Operations, this role provides important oversight for biosecure research operations and manages the research animal care staff.
Requirements
- 3 years of experience in biosecurity, animal health, and/or animal production.
- Strong understanding of infectious disease control
- Livestock management or lab animal research experience
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing animal research.
- Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software and data reporting tools.
- Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as needed.
Nice To Haves
- 3 years experience in biosecurity and animal health.
- Experience in poultry and swine husbandry
Responsibilities
- Provide expertise, oversight, and support of research animal housing. Includes oversight and monitoring of research animal health, animal husbandry, surgical assisting, reproduction maintenance, disease testing, administration of medications and inoculation, adherence to biosecurity protocols and biosafety level 2 research standards
- Management of animal care staff through coordination and direction of daily activities and facilitation of recurring staff meetings.
- Acting lead on project scheduling and logistics for animal health research facilities and coordination of research trials and data collection with faculty PIs.
- Communicate and collaborate with clinical veterinarians to support prevention and treatment of disease.
- Provide faculty, staff, and student training and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including records for daily care as required by IACUC, AAALAC, and USDA
- Design and implement species and research-specific SMPs and SOPs for animal health research.
- Promote a culture of biosecurity and biosafety awareness and accountability by monitoring compliance of employees and visitors with entry/exit protocols, implementation of quarantine procedures, and sanitation standards and conducting risk assessments to develop mitigation strategies for disease prevention.
- Serves as building coordinator for animal health research animal facilities; responsible for scheduling and coordinating maintenance and repairs and responding to emergencies including outages.
- Assists with budgeting and resource allocation
- Sources animals and manages inventory of feed, supplements, veterinary supplies, and equipment.
- Support strategic initiatives to enhance productivity and sustainability.
- Completion of various administrative tasks utilizing Microsoft Teams, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
