About The Position

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). CHAI supports governments and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems. CHAI's Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative aims to support Ministries of Health in systematically capturing and scaling the benefits of AI, working towards a vision of “AI Native Health Systems” for accessible, high-quality, and efficient healthcare delivery. The initiative has four pillars: (1) AI Doctors for clinicians and patients, (2) AI Diagnostics for decentralized and improved diagnoses, and (3) health systems AI applications for disease surveillance, financial and workforce management, and supply chain. The fourth pillar, AI Foundations, focuses on strengthening the governance, workforce, infrastructure, and digital/data foundations necessary for sustainable AI adoption. CHAI recently co-launched the AI Commons for Global Health to foster collaboration on AI for global health. The Manager, AI Foundations will report to the Associate Director, AI Foundations and will be central to advancing this work. This role involves strengthening governance, workforce, infrastructure, and digital/data foundations for sustainable AI adoption, leading research to inform strategy, managing diverse stakeholders (ministries of health, global health partners, technology companies), and translating complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences. The role also supports the AI Commons for Global Health through stakeholder engagement and operational management. This dynamic position combines strategic thinking, hands-on execution, and relationship management, with opportunities for growth as CHAI's AI for health work expands. This position can be leveled as a Manager or Senior Manager, depending on experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Master's degree in public health, public policy, data science, computer science, or a related field preferred
  • 4-8 years of relevant professional experience (leveling for role will be commensurate with experience)
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in AI, digital health, and / or health systems strengthening
  • Strong research skills, with the ability to rapidly synthesize complex information and translate it into clear, actionable recommendations
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including experience building relationships with government officials, partners, and funders
  • Creative problem-solving ability, with comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-evolving environments with limited precedent
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations and technical materials for varied audiences
  • Exceptional work ethic with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple work streams simultaneously and prioritize effectively under tight timelines
  • Experience working in countries where CHAI operates and with government stakeholders highly preferred
  • High level of comfort leveraging AI workflows for research and resource creation preferred
  • Additional language skills relevant to CHAI's country programs are a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and technical assistance to ministries of health on the design and strengthening of AI governance frameworks, workforce capacity, infrastructure, and digital and data systems
  • Conduct and synthesize research on AI for health trends, tools, and emerging practices to inform CHAI's strategy and country-level engagements
  • Support the AI Commons for Global Health, including stakeholder coordination and operational management
  • Manage relationships with key partners, including ministry of health counterparts, serving as a trusted advisor and thought partner on AI-related priorities
  • Build and maintain relationships with technology companies, funders, and global health partners to advance shared goals related to AI for health
  • Develop tools, frameworks, and resources that ministries of health and CHAI teams can use to assess AI readiness and plan implementation
  • Identify creative, practical solutions to novel challenges that arise in a fast-evolving and often ambiguous technical and policy landscape
  • Support the development of work plans, budgets, and reporting materials for AI-related programs
  • Prepare presentations, briefs, and other materials to communicate complex technical topics clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including government officials and donors
  • Coordinate across CHAI country and global teams to ensure alignment and knowledge-sharing on AI for health approaches
  • Represent CHAI at relevant convenings, working groups, and partner meetings related to AI for health
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts, including drafting proposals and donor updates related to AI for health work
  • Mentor and support team members as needed
  • Participate in any other duties as assigned
