About The Position

Every day, United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM) works alongside community partners, donors, and nonprofits to create measurable, lasting change across Southeastern Michigan. By investing in programs that support education, economic stability, and health, UWSEM helps ensure individuals and families have the resources they need not just to get by, but to thrive. Our work is grounded in collaboration, accountability, and a deep commitment to the communities we serve. This full-time position offers a salary of $70,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes major medical, dental, and vision coverage, a 403(b) retirement plan, short- and long-term disability, AD&D coverage, ASPCA pet insurance, a DoorDash discount, 20 days of paid time off per year, 12 paid holidays, and one floating holiday.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, education, or a related field
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in government, policy, advocacy, education or a related field
  • Microsoft Suite proficiency

Responsibilities

  • Develop advocacy strategies and campaigns to drive policy outcomes aligned with UWSEM's goals, with a focus on education and out-of-school time.
  • Monitor and research federal, state, and local education policy proposals, activating those with alignment to UWSEM's mission.
  • Help build and manage relationships with elected officials and key staff.
  • Coordinate projects related to public policy and advocacy (e.g., training sessions, webinars, presentations, lobby days, partner convenings, summits, etc.).
  • Work closely with the Youth Opportunity team and other departments to ensure UWSEM's public policy agenda is aligned with the expertise and insights gained from the organization's work on the ground.
  • Establish and maintain strong external partnerships across coalitions to mobilize around shared policy priorities
  • Assemble and distribute a monthly legislative summary to the United Way staff.
  • Represent UWSEM at local, state, and national coalitions and conferences.
  • Provide advocacy training to United Way staff and partners.
  • Collaborate with Policy & Advocacy team to mentor and provide oversight for Policy Fellows
