A Brief Overview Works independently to perform digital and 3D screening and diagnostic mammography and may also include wire and wire-free localizations, stereotactic breast biopsies, and DEXA imaging based on hospital policies and/or practice standards, under the supervision of the interpreting physician. Must demonstrate an understanding of breast anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Must maintain accuracy in breast positioning, exposure techniques, and image evaluation while adhering to radiation protection and safety standards. Must understand the federal regulations governing mammography practice to meet the standards for the performance of breast imaging. Must have knowledge of the quality assurance policies and quality control testing for mammography within federal regulation guidelines. Must prepare and set up medical supplies using aseptic techniques for stereotactic biopsies and wire needle localizations and explain procedures to patients. Imaging technologists are required to cover all outpatient and hospital locations as necessary and appropriate and may also assist with mentoring and/or training students, and new hires.
