About The Position

Under the direction of the Radiology Director and Radiologist, the Mammography Technologist performs imaging procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. This role involves independent judgment and initiative in applying ionizing radiation for radiological diagnosis. The technologist operates Mammography Equipment to produce high-quality images with the lowest possible radiation dose, utilizing PACS, implementing patient charges, and assisting physicians as needed. Responsibilities include knowledge of all Mammography procedures, proper patient positioning, exposures, and documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an Accredited Diagnostic Imaging Program.
  • ARRT in Radiology License.
  • ARRT(R) Required.
  • ARRT(M) Required.
  • BLS must be obtained during orientation period.
  • Minimum of one-year clinical experience in direct patient care setting preferred.
  • Proficiency at a technical level not requiring constant direct supervision in Mammography.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to use a computer terminal, fax machine, and copy machine.

Responsibilities

  • Produces high-quality mammograms under the direction of a radiologist.
  • Performs mammography/Radiology procedures according to departmental protocols.
  • Positions patients and provides immobilization and positioning devices as needed.
  • Selects proper technical factors on an individual basis.
  • Performs routine and special views as needed.
  • Assures image quality meets all departmental and Hospital standards.
  • Monitors images produced and adjusts density or contrast to improve image quality.
  • Reviews and evaluates film to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes.
  • Prepares all appropriate paperwork for interpretation.
  • Participates in all Mammography related QI, QA, and QC activities as required.
  • Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient records and generating charge slips.
  • Greets patients by confirming identification, reviewing imaging requests, checking for special instructions, and confirming anticipated services.
  • Minimizes radiation to patient and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques, using beam restrictive devices, and applying knowledge of exposure factors.
  • Ensures operation of mammography equipment by following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and notifying supervisor if repairs are needed.
  • Uses proper body mechanics when lifting is required.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, and complying with federal and state legal regulations and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Reduces patient stress about the exam and educates patients concerning the procedure.
  • Explains procedures to patients and answers all patient questions.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties and demonstrating a comforting, professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrates equipment and its uses to the patient.
  • Educates patients about breast self-exam.
  • Completes all exams timely in PACS and EMR.
  • Properly performs procedures for making patient CDs and verifies all information is on CDs before distribution.
  • Verifies that the written physician order matches the order in PACS.
  • Verifies all images are in PACS, scans any required documentation, and adds any additional information in the notes section as needed.
