About The Position

The Mammographer is responsible for determining the appropriate radiographic/mammographic technique and patient positioning for specified exams. This role involves operating equipment to obtain optimal images, assessing patient history, and ensuring data accuracy. The Mammographer also manages image transmission to various systems, verifies adherence to standards, and participates in advanced procedures like galactograms, needle localizations, and stereotactic biopsies. Ensuring a safe patient and work environment through adherence to safety standards, maintaining CPR certification, and delivering patient care in accordance with departmental standards are key aspects of this position. Additionally, the role involves managing department supplies and participating in Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of AMA approved school/program of Radiologic Technology.
  • Three years experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
  • This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated.
  • Knowledge of radiography services.
  • Basic knowledge of RIS
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in both Radiology and Mammography
  • Licensed by the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety (IDNS)
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift and/or move patients.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts any day of the week.
  • Ability to transport objects from one location to another.
  • Radiation exposure.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
  • Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Mammography experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Positions patient and operates equipment to assure optimal images of designated portion of the body.
  • Determines appropriate radiographic/mammographic technique based on anatomy and patient’s condition to obtain high quality radiographic images.
  • Secures history from patient regarding reason for prescribed test and enters data in the appropriate system for the radiologist's review.
  • Assures patient data is correct according to department standards.
  • Successfully sends images to second look system, soft copy workstation and archival system.
  • Obtains radiology jacket and report folder.
  • Assure prior films and reports are available along with correct order for determined exam.
  • Tracks patient through on the RIS to ensure proper billing for appropriate exam.
  • Completes RIS by closing patient on patient history system.
  • Ensures images have been received on Soft copy workstation and PACS archival system.
  • Assures availability of necessary supplies for procedures.
  • Obtains previous patient studies prior to onset of procedure.
  • Perform needle verification on multicare unit to ensure equipment accuracy.
  • Checks mammogram machine prior to needle loc/galactogram.
  • Performs procedures independently along with radiologist along with obtaining specimens.
  • Prepares patient for exam, including setting up trays, prepping patients and assessing patient's medical needs if necessary.
  • Applies post procedure dressings and education.
  • Maintains compliance with established safety standards to protect patients and staff at all times.
  • Attends mandatory in-services relating to patient safety.
  • Insures cleanliness, neatness by overall appearance of designated work areas.
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes the flow of patients and paper work, to assure that patient’s waiting time is kept to a minimum.
  • When necessary, changes the process to adapt to the needs of the department.
  • Follows proper telephone etiquette.
  • Participates in team problem-solving issues that would improve patient care, department operations, quality assurance, interdepartmental relationships, and employee satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates rapport and assists others when necessary.
  • Able to perform miscellaneous clerical functions.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and report deficiencies to coordinator to ensure adequate level of supplies.
  • Stocks and straightens up exam and changing rooms daily.
  • Ability to indentify errors with machinery and basic problem solving techniques.
  • Reports equipment malfunctions to Mammography Coordinator or Manager.
