About The Position

This role involves performing diagnostic mammographic and stereotactic procedures to screen and diagnose breast abnormalities and breast cancer. The Mammographer will ensure equipment operability and MQSA compliance through quality assurance checks and documentation. Responsibilities include preparing exam rooms, reviewing patient requisitions and previous reports, consulting with radiologists, educating patients about the exam process and results, and ensuring patient history accuracy. The position also involves performing DEXA scans and maintaining quality control documentation for mammography and bone density operations. The role requires maintaining inventory, ensuring equipment is properly maintained and repaired, and staying current with training in daily quality control, patient positioning, exam protocols, data management, radiation protection, and PACS systems. The incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining permanent patient records, ensuring proper data retrieval and updates, and completing all PACS and processing to ensure appropriate data transfer. Accessing patient directories, history timelines, images, and user manuals, as well as burning CDs and managing technologist work lists, are also key functions. Adherence to ARRT and Massachusetts State Licensing policies and procedures is required, along with participation in professional development and continuing education. The role emphasizes ethical patient relationships, confidentiality, and providing excellent service to patients, families, visitors, volunteers, and co-workers. Other duties as assigned are also part of the role.

Requirements

Ability to read, write and communicate in English
Graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology (ARRT)
Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
Radiologic Technologist licensure within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Radiologic Technologist
BLS) - Basic Life Support certification
Upon completion of training, candidate must successfully pass ARRT Mammography registry and become licensed in Mammography within 1 year of eligibility.
Graduate of an accredited program in Radiographic Technology (ARRT) - Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiography and Mammography
Valid Massachusetts State License from Massachusetts Radiation Control Bord in Radiography and Mammography
Currently performing 3D mammography

Nice To Haves

ARRT Bone Density certification preferred
Must become proficient in bone density exams within 6 months of entering position

Responsibilities

Assures that diagnostic mammographic and stereotactic equipment/devices are operable, ensuring MQSA compliance by completing all necessary quality assurance checks, and maintaining accurate documentation.
Prepares exam rooms with necessary mammographic and stereotactic equipment/devices and appropriate patient supplies.
Thoroughly reviews requisitions, and radiologists last dictated report/images, determining the ordered radiological exams.
Make any necessary order changes for accurate billing and inform medical records if previous images need to be requested.
Consult with radiologist, as needed, for any clarification of ordered mammography exams based upon last dictated report or current history.
Provides patient with explanation of the mammographic exam to be performed and assures patient is aware of result process.
Provide patient education on process for screening mammograms results versus diagnostic mammogram process and results.
Assure that required patient history form is completed.
Clarify any patient history to assure accuracy.
Refer patient to nurse practitioner if patient history identifies any new breast symptom, if diagnostic exam.
Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of patients during examinations and procedures to ensure the exam requested matches the patient’s condition/complaint, safety and comfort, while preparing for and undergoing mammographic procedures.
Performs screening/diagnostic mammographic/stereotactic procedures, safely operating equipment/devices specializing in the screening and diagnosing of breast abnormalities and breast cancer.
Use mammographic equipment and adjust controls to set exposure factors and process images using appropriate safety precautions necessary to produce quality mammograms.
Assure proper identification by using two patient identifiers.
Follow established policies/procedures set by the American College of Radiology and MQSA for breast imaging and procedures.
Coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency using and/or modifying established procedures, to ensure timely completion of work in conformance with department policies and procedures.
Evaluate mammogram images for technical quality to include region of interest when necessary.
Maintain adequate radiology records and label all mammogram films to assure proper identification.
Performs DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) including spine, hip, and forearm if needed according to clinical history.
Performs and maintains the Quality Control documentation as required by regulatory agencies.
Perform the assigned Quality Control tests in a timely and accurate manner and resolve potential problems
Maintains adequate inventory and supplies needed for mammography and bone density operation.
Must ensure the equipment is handled, properly maintained, and reports all malfunctions to the contracted service and ensures timely completion of any service repair.
Responsible for maintaining knowledge and training in: Daily quality control, Patient positioning, Exam protocols, Data management, Radiation protection, Epic PACS system, Data management to maintain permanent patient records with correct entry of patient information.
Proper retrieval and update of patient information prior to scanning.
Must complete the requisite course of instruction for operator certification including software and hardware operation, quality control, patient positioning, and radiation protection.
Completes all PACS and processing to ensure appropriate transfer of data.
Ability to access patient directory, history timeline, images and user manual
Ability to burn CDs
Appropriate use of technologist work list, linking exams and exception resolution.
Follow established policies, procedures and protocols set forth by department and ARRT.
Participates in activities which promote professional self-growth and development; meeting minimum requirements for continuing education as directed by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and Massachusetts State Licensing for Mammography.
Maintain an ethical relationship with patients, physicians, personnel and guests and ensure patient confidentiality at all times
