About The Position

The Mammography Technologist is responsible for performing all mammographic procedures according to established protocols. This includes checking patient history, marking skin defects, explaining procedures to patients, and ensuring patient comfort. The technologist must adhere to referring doctor's requisitions unless advised otherwise by a Radiologist or by contacting the patient's doctor. They are responsible for entering proper information into the EMR system, reviewing previous reports and images, and demonstrating the ability to provide care appropriate for diverse patient populations. Maintaining a neat and orderly exam room, cleaning equipment, and performing daily quality control are also key responsibilities. Additionally, the technologist must be knowledgeable in imaging breast specimens, acquiring all necessary images and positions according to ACR accreditation mandates and MQSA guidelines, and imaging patients with complex needs or advanced positioning requirements. Assisting with stereotactic biopsies and localizations, operating biopsy and localization equipment, and acquiring continuing education credits are also part of the role. The position also involves participating in maintaining Augusta Health values and expectations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of an AMA approved program in Radiologic Technology.
  • Registered in radiology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology with documented Continuing Education to maintain registration/certification.
  • Possess advanced Mammography Registry/certification or be board eligible for Mammography Registry/certification within 12 months.
  • CPR certified or obtained within 30 days of hire
  • One or more years of experience in the field of Radiology

Nice To Haves

  • One or more years of Mammography experience
  • Associates Degree or higher
  • Preferred completion of an accredited Mammography program.

Responsibilities

  • Checking the patient's history and marking any skin defects or other unusual findings (i.e. scars, lumps, nevi, etc.).
  • Explaining procedures to the patient and making the patient feel comfortable in the room.
  • Explaining the exam to new patients (baseline) and returning patients if necessary, answering any questions they may have with limitations.
  • Performing all mammographic procedures according to established protocols.
  • Checking the requisition to be sure the proper exam has been ordered and all pertinent information is included on the form.
  • Performing the exam according to referring doctor’s requisition, unless otherwise advised by the Radiologist or by contacting the patient’s doctor.
  • Entering proper information into the EMR system, making sure all exams are put into a taken status.
  • Reviewing previous reports and previous images prior to beginning the exam.
  • Demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for the age or mental status of the patient served by this department.
  • Maintaining the mammography exam room in a neat and orderly fashion, ensuring proper cleaning of equipment used with each patient, following each patient, and at the end of the day per manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Imaging a breast specimen from the O.R. according to established protocol, showing the image to the Radiologist, calling the report to the surgeon, and documenting that the call was made.
  • Acquiring all images and positions for mammography as established by the ACR accreditation mandate and meeting MQSA guidelines.
  • Imaging patients with complex needs and/or possessing advanced position skills based on body habitus and pathology (examples include wheelchair patients, implant patients, kyphotic/lordotic patients, among others).
  • Assisting with stereotactic biopsies and localizations.
  • Operating biopsy and localization equipment.
  • Documenting daily quality control as recommended by manufacturer and maintaining ACR guidelines and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Acquiring the correct and required number of continuing education credits as mandated by MQSA.
  • Performing other related activities as requested by the Breast Center Manager or Radiology Director.
  • Participating in maintaining Augusta Health values, indicators, and employee expectations.
