Founded in 1950, St. Anthony's is the most comprehensive safety net service center in San Francisco, directly providing food, clothing, medical care, addiction recovery services, access to technology, job training, and other critical resources to the community. The Advancement Department oversees all fundraising and communications activities for the organization. We inform, inspire, and invite people to support the work of St. Anthony’s with monetary and in-kind donations. We engage prospective donors and thank our current supporters for their investment in St. Anthony’s. The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for managing a defined portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the ability and affinity to make significant philanthropic investments. This role is focused on building authentic relationships, advancing donors through a disciplined moves management process, and securing major gifts in alignment with organizational priorities. This is a frontline fundraising role focused on donor engagement and revenue generation, and operates with a high degree of autonomy and strategic responsibility within a structured fund development operation. Requirements

  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in fundraising, development, or relationship-based roles, with demonstrated ability to manage donor relationships and support gift cultivation and solicitation.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal skills, and ability to interact with a wide range of people.
  • Exceptional communication, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills with a highly developed understanding of self and others to build and maintain productive, personable relationships with donors and team members; equally comfortable speaking one-on-one or to a large group.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate others through clear, persuasive, and compelling messaging.
  • Ability to work efficiently, juggle tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and achieve goals.
  • Ability to manage complex processes confidently and efficiently while paying attention to details to provide an excellent donor experience.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information appropriately.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, the Google suite, and Zoom, and experience with basic spreadsheet formulas and data analysis tools
  • Knowledge of database systems, Salesforce highly preferred.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occassional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to regularly travel throughout the Bay Area to attend donor meetings, cultivation events, site visits, and other fundraising-related activities in support of advancing organizational goals.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired.
  • Commitment to St. Anthony Foundation Statement of Values and a desire to work for a social services agency serving the poor.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of approximately 75–120 qualified donors and prospects with the capacity to give $25,000+ annually.
  • Plan, develop, and oversee the implementation of individualized strategies for the entire portfolio and independently represent the organization with each assigned donor and prospect.
  • Exercises substantial independent judgment in donor strategy development, portfolio prioritization, cultivation planning, and solicitation execution by maintaining clear next steps and timelines for all prospects using moves management discipline.
  • Identify, qualify, and engage new prospects, and work diligently to convert to active donors to ensure the ongoing success of St Anthony's work in the Tenderloin.
  • Deliver exceptional, proactive stewardship to current donors and prospects, prioritizing in-person engagement and aligning their philanthropic goals with St. Anthony’s strategy and impact in San Francisco, and our unique model of Whole Person Care.
  • Be present and engage in high-quality donor touchpoints, including at small gatherings, volunteer engagements, Foundation events, and site visits.
  • Lead or support major gift solicitations, including preparing tailored proposals and funding opportunities.
  • Actively participate in internal portfolio review and Advancement team meetings to analyze data, share insights, inform coordinated major donor strategies, and ensure accountability, collaboration, and momentum.
  • Own progress toward a defined revenue goal and provide monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue projections and forecasts for the portfolio.
  • Articulate St Anthony’s case for support in a clear and compelling way.
  • Partner across teams to craft proposals, impact reports, and donor communications, supporting effective stewardship and long-term donor relationships, and to align funding opportunities with organizational priorities.
  • Strategically engage executive leadership, senior staff, Board members, donors, and program teams in cultivation and solicitation efforts, including preparation of clear briefings, talking points, and customized materials to ensure coordinated and high-impact outreach.
  • Partner with leadership and board members to leverage relationships and open doors
  • In partnership with Advancement administration, ensure timely, thoughtful acknowledgment and follow-up for all donor interactions.
  • Complete accurate, thorough, and legible reports and documentation, and efficiently enter and retrieve required data and information using electronic database systems.
  • Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, service delivery, and employee engagement.
  • Represent St. Anthony's through deep knowledge of our services and model of care, an understanding of the programmatic issue areas, and research on the philanthropic landscape.
  • With support from advancement admin team, maintain disciplined, real-time Salesforce documentation of donor engagement, strategies, and next steps, and deliver regular progress updates to senior leadership to support revenue forecasting, performance tracking, and strategic planning.
  • Participate in relevant meetings supporting team communication and the program's capacity to fulfill organizational goals and mission.
