About The Position

The Maintenance Worker supports the day-to-day upkeep, repair, and safety of Covenant House Illinois’ facilities. This role ensures that residential and program spaces remain safe, functional, and welcoming for youth and staff. The ideal candidate brings strong technical ability, reliability, and professionalism while working in a youth-centered environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general building systems.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact respectfully with youth and staff.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Successful completion of background screening.
  • Commitment to CHIL’s mission, values, and Code of Conduct.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) or more years of general maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience in residential, shelter, nonprofit, or multi-unit housing settings strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs related to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, lighting, appliances, doors, locks, drywall, flooring, and exterior grounds.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests and work orders.
  • Conduct regular walkthroughs of residential and program areas to identify and address safety concerns.
  • Ensure common areas, bathrooms, kitchens, offices, and youth spaces remain safe and operational.
  • Support implementation of CHIL’s preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Monitor building systems and notify supervisor of developing issues.
  • Replace filters, light bulbs, batteries, and other routine components as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with safety standards and CHIL policies.
  • Ensure fire exits, extinguishers, emergency lighting, cameras, and access systems remain operational.
  • Immediately report hazards or environmental concerns impacting youth or staff safety.
  • Escort and monitor vendors while on-site.
  • Document maintenance activities and contractor services.
  • Assist with facilities-related projects and capital improvements.
  • Assist with room setups, furniture moves, and youth space improvements.
  • Maintain organized storage areas and track maintenance inventory supplies.
  • Support seasonal needs, including snow removal coordination and salting.
  • Perform general fleet vehicle maintenance and basic upkeep.
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned.
