About The Position

Under supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, will perform functions such as general landscaping, building maintenance, and grounds keeping. This is a non-supervisory position that includes the performance of hard manual labor tasks. Duties may include daily raking of the beach with a John Deer tractor, emptying trash barrels with a garbage truck, and picking up litter from beaches and park grounds.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate preferred.
  • Must have experience in custodianship and must enjoy working with the public.
  • Valid State of Texas Driver's License
  • Must be able to follow oral instructions.
  • Must be able to use power and hand tools, to perform strenuous work in the outdoor.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in English and Spanish.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Physical requirements may include lifting /carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Subject to handling, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential job functions.
  • Will be required to drive county owned vehicles and other equipment as needed.
  • Weekend, Holiday, and evening work required.
  • This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility.
  • Must submit to a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general landscape duties such as grass mowing, weeding, edging, watering landscaped areas, raking leaves, palm tree and plant trimming, and planting trees and plants.
  • Landscaping maintenance, which includes emptying trash cans, trash removal, litter pick-up around park grounds, parking lot and pavilions.
  • Responsible for restroom maintenance.
  • Loads and unloads material from truck for landscaping, etc.
  • Sweeps and washes down sidewalks, pavilions, shade structures, boardwalk, dune walkovers and parking areas, removing sand from pavilion areas and parking lots.
  • Rakes the beach, cleans bar-b-que pit areas and washes down picnic tables.
  • Makes simple repairs to boardwalk cable railing, equipment and tools.
  • Responsible for herbicide/pesticide control.
  • Responsible for carrying out duties assigned in accordance with the Cameron County Park System Hurricane Plan such as storing trash barrels and picnic tables and reporting for duty upon area being deemed safe to return after storm making landfall.
  • Beach Cleaning; picking up litter from beaches and park grounds.
  • Sweeping and shoveling sand from roadways and sidewalks.
  • Assists the Construction crew when necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
