About The Position

Under general supervision, performs various maintenance and repair activities within the City’s public works infrastructure. This role involves operating light motorized vehicles and equipment, repairing water and sewer cuts, curves, walkways, sidewalks, driveways, and cave-ins. The position also participates in concrete projects, may provide work training to other employees, and maintains and organizes tools and equipment. Additionally, employees may perform small engine maintenance and repair, support positive public relations, and are required to maintain confidentiality. Employees may be called upon to work during emergencies to ensure public safety and restore vital services.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in public works maintenance and repair operations
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • May require possession of a Commercial Driver’s license
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of street maintenance and repair operations.
  • Knowledge of concrete installation and repair methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic control methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of small engine and repair methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Skill in handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Skill in providing efficient customer service.
  • Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various light motorized equipment and vehicles.
  • Skill in using various hand and power tools.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
