About The Position

The City of Topeka is hiring a general facility and equipment maintenance mechanic at the Maintenance Worker II or III level, depending on qualifications. The role performs semi-skilled construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings, equipment, grounds, city-owned assets, and facilities. The position works Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Requirements

Maintenance Worker II: High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience performing semi-skilled building, mechanical, construction, or grounds maintenance work.
Maintenance Worker III: High school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of experience in building, mechanical, construction, or grounds maintenance work.
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable within the City’s guidelines.
Basic knowledge of mechanics and/or plumbing hand tools.
Knowledge of standard safety practices, hazards, and precautions.
Motivated self-starter able to thrive in a fast-paced, changing work environment.

Nice To Haves

Maintenance Worker II: Supervisory experience.
Maintenance Worker III: Field technician experience with a licensed HVAC contractor.
Maintenance Worker III: Two years of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

Inspect buildings, machinery, and equipment to identify repair and maintenance needs.
Perform carpentry repairs on buildings, facilities, and equipment.
Perform plumbing repairs and maintenance, including replacing exposed pipe, sinks, and tanks, and unclogging drains.
Repair and maintain electrical equipment.
Perform semi-skilled construction, repair, and maintenance tasks involving city-owned assets and facilities.
