About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of City buildings and facilities, streets, parks including synthetic turf areas, landscaping, medians, sewers, and rights-of-way, and removes graffiti. The Maintenance Worker – Turf Specialist is differentiated from the Maintenance Worker, who has broader responsibility for performing more complex tasks requiring more specialized knowledge of maintenance procedures, contract services, and skilled use of equipment especially in the repair and maintenance of synthetic turf areas.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
  • Four years of experience in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of synthetic turf.
  • Two years of building, streets, parks, landscape, and/or general maintenance work experience is required.
  • Valid Class C California driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and proof of insurance in compliance with the City’s Vehicle Insurance Policy standards.
  • In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of La Puente employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.
  • General maintenance, construction and repair, and cleaning techniques.
  • Basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing repair methods.
  • Equipment operation procedures and proper use of hand and power tools.
  • Traffic control and safety practices involving streets, storm drains, parks including synthetic turf surfaces, facilities, medians and landscape work.
  • Record keeping techniques.
  • Basic math.
  • Ability to operate forklift, loader, mowers, and small power and hand tools in performing maintenance work.
  • Ability to operate jackhammer, concrete saw, pressure washer, blowers, and other mobile power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to use multi-meter and air conditioning coolant gauge to check air pressure and fluid levels.
  • Ability to perform assigned maintenance tasks following established procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to follow proper safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and management.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Loads, unloads, and stores delivered supplies and equipment in Maintenance Yard; drives to and from work sites operating service trucks, dump truck, and stake bed truck; and places traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and delineators needed at different work sites.
  • Uses hand and power tools at worksites, including post diggers, blowers, and power washing equipment; operates mowers and tractors, and uses chain saws; performs preventative maintenance to maintain tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains City parks, landscaping, and median strips; performs ground level trimming of trees, bushes, and other plants; picks up and hauls debris collected throughout the City.
  • Prepares street surfaces and applies cold patch for pothole repairs; breaks up and removes concrete for sidewalk repairs.
  • Cleans, washes, and repaints surfaces and performs graffiti removal.
  • Clears and cleans drains and culverts.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces traffic signs; marks and paints crosswalk legends and curbs.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms; dumps trash and replaces liners.
  • Sets up structures, tables and chairs for special events and places and removes road closure barricades; installs seasonal decorations and banners.
  • Tests and checks air conditioning and heating equipment, including vents and ducts, and amp flow meter to check conductivity; performs basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs; installs electrical switches, lighting ballasts, flush valves, and other components.
  • Responds to after service calls or other emergency situations, as needed.
  • Periodically tests infill levels to ensure proper Gmax levels are met.
  • Grooms synthetic turf carpet fibers to an upright position by performing dragging and brooming techniques.
  • Redistributes synthetic turf infill mix to assist with aesthetics, reduce static, and improve footing.
  • Replenishes synthetic turf infill mix to create padding, shock-absorption, and resiliency.
  • Provides antimicrobial protection by treating synthetic turf with products to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Inspects and troubleshoots all synthetic turf for common problems and repairs, such as frequent seam repair.
