About The Position

This seasonal position leads field crews performing trail maintenance, repair, and construction projects. The work includes planning and leading wilderness trail crews on trail log-outs, bridge installations, rigging operations, and sustainable trail reroutes. The leader estimates the time and materials needed for projects and selects appropriate methods and techniques to ensure work quality and sustainability. The job requires living and working in remote wilderness areas, often leading crews in the backcountry for eight-day schedules and spending as much as 100% of work time away from the official duty station. Work may involve hiking up to 20 miles per day while carrying a backpack and tools, and relocating camps and equipment along trail sections 20 to 30 miles long. Employees may use backpack tents or tarps and cook over fires or small gas stoves. Work takes place on narrow, steep wilderness trails in varied weather, sometimes in hazardous locations far from assistance. The position requires heavy physical effort, including frequent bending, lifting, stooping, and repetitive tool use. Employees may lift and carry objects over 100 pounds, move rocks and logs, use rock bars to move very large rocks, and use hammers, shovels, and other hand tools. Hazards may include extreme temperatures, precipitation, wind, brush, biting insects, and the risk of strains, cuts, scrapes, or more serious injuries. Employees must follow safety precautions and use appropriate protective equipment. This is a temporary seasonal appointment, generally expected to end when the season’s work is complete. The appointment is not to exceed 1,039 hours, though certain parks and programs may use an approved extension or an appointment not to exceed 1,560 hours. Employment may end earlier because of funding, project needs, performance, or other considerations. The anticipated entry-on-duty period is April–May, subject to weather, project needs, and funding.
