About The Position

Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the repair and maintenance of the Swift County Highway, Bridge and Ditch systems. Responsible for maintaining and repairing Swift County roads, bridges, right-of-way, related structures, and highway maintenance equipment to provide for the safety and adequate travel and accessibility for the public.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or equivalent and some relevant work experience.
  • Post-secondary school or college classes for Class A CDL.
  • Valid Class A Commercial MN Driver’s License.
  • Ability to acquire forklift certification within one year of hire.
  • Ability to drive specialized equipment and operate three plows i.e., one-way plow, underbody plow, wing plow and sander, etc.
  • Knowledge of local and state laws and regulations regarding the operation of equipment, particularly those pertaining to their operation on public streets.
  • Knowledge and skill in proper snow and ice removal techniques.
  • General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment and tools to which assigned.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintains a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and inspects county roads, ditches, signs, culverts, and related duties in all seasonal conditions.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Hauls and places gravel and bituminous on county highways and roads.
  • Performs pavement maintenance and repair including paving and crack filling.
  • Operates snowplows and other heavy equipment to remove snow, ice and storm debris from County roadways and applies ice control materials.
  • Maintains and repairs culverts, ditches, bridges, right-of-way, etc. including brush and weed control and herbicide application.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintains maintenance equipment and vehicles and ensures compliance with DOT safety regulations.
  • Checks fluids, tire and edging changes and greasing of equipment.
  • Mows and maintains ditches.
  • Responds to disaster clean-up and tree removal.
  • Performs welding and fabricating duties as needed.
  • Attends trainings, meetings, and educational opportunities.
  • Subject to emergency call outside of normal work hours.
  • Custodial and building maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
