About The Position

Performs skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance for Facilities Management operations and County support services, including high-visibility landscaping, memorial tree and nursery maintenance, and construction projects at County-owned and leased facilities. The role helps provide a clean and safe environment for visitors, tenants, and employees, and may involve leading a crew or working independently with minimal supervision. This is an essential employee position. The employee must work when County offices are officially closed because of inclement weather, natural disasters, or other emergencies. Weekend and holiday work may be required. The position reports to the Assistant Grounds Superintendent at the Park location and may work with other grounds personnel or lead seasonal grounds workers.

Requirements

At least one year of experience in commercial lawn care, landscaping, or a related position, or equivalent training at a vocational or trade school.
High school diploma or GED.
Basic computer skills, including email, internet navigation, and creating spreadsheets and documents.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, be self-motivated, and work both independently and with others.
Ability to assist the supervisor in their absence.
Valid Pennsylvania driver's license with an acceptable driving record; must submit to a driving-record background check.
Must pass pre-employment fingerprint-based background check, ChildLine Safety Check, and drug screening.
Ability to lift 75 pounds to waist height, 50 pounds to shoulder height, and 40 pounds above the head.
Ability to climb a ladder to a working height of 30 feet; traverse uneven terrain for long distances; and frequently stoop, kneel, bend, and reach overhead for extended periods.
Must be willing to work outdoors in extreme weather and sit for extended periods while operating equipment.
Must wear long pants, department-supplied long- and/or short-sleeved shirts, and closed-toe, closed-back shoes that support the ankle.
Continued employment is contingent on obtaining the specified Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture applicator certifications within six months if not already held.

Nice To Haves

Athletic field maintenance experience, such as baseball infield grooming, turf grass management, or basketball and tennis court maintenance.
Equipment experience.
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Core Applicator Certification and Category 23 Applicator Certification; alternatively, the ability to obtain both within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

Perform routine grounds maintenance on County-owned and leased properties using hand and power tools and medium-to-heavy equipment.
Assist with the memorial tree program and maintenance and planting at the Dr. John Moss Tree Nursery.
Maintain the Garden of Five Senses and other high-visibility landscaped bed areas.
Assist the Grounds Crew with routine maintenance at other Facilities Management locations and the Trails Crew with tree or trail work.
Apply herbicide as needed at Facilities Management locations.
Safely operate a pickup truck, with or without a trailer, and remove snow at County properties by shoveling, snow blowing, or plowing with a truck or tractor.
Plow or salt Park roads and parking lots.
Perform basic equipment and vehicle maintenance and oversee seasonal work in the field.
Use a computer to navigate the internet and Windows applications, manage email, and work with a computer-based work-order system.
Paint; collect and haul trash and recyclables; perform janitorial and custodial duties; and maintain playgrounds.
Follow County and Departmental policies and procedures and perform other duties as required.
