About The Position

Join the City of Olympia’s Public Works Waste ReSources team and help keep our community clean, safe, and sustainable. Public Works Waste ReSources has one Maintenance Worker I position available. We are seeking team oriented and customer focused individuals to join our Collections Program team. This group is responsible for the collection and disposal of garbage, recycling, and organics. This position works Monday through Friday 5:30a.m. to 1:30p.m. year-round and supports residential cart delivery, cart removals, and cart maintenance. The role also assists the commercial maintenance crew, including collection staff. Maintenance Worker I is the entry and training level in the Maintenance Worker series, which includes Maintenance Worker I, Maintenance Worker II, Field Crew Leader, and Lead Maintenance Worker classifications. Maintenance Workers I perform routine labor along with basic repair and construction tasks. More routine assignments are typically completed under general supervision.

Requirements

  • One year's general work experience required.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers' License
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining small manual and power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
  • Ability to respond to citizen inquiries in a professional and appropriate manner.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and pick up refuse and recycling carts and containers.
  • Repair and maintain refuse and recycling carts and containers.
  • Respond to customer requests for special pick ups.
  • Wash and break down carts for recycling.
  • Provide support to maintenance and collection staff.
  • Respond to questions, comments, and complaints from customers and the public.
  • Perform work outdoors in inclement weather and in dirty, wet, noisy, or confined work environments.
  • Perform manual tasks and navigate a variety of surfaces and terrain.
  • Lift and move heavy objects, up to 70 pounds.
  • Maintain punctual, regular, and reliable attendance.
  • Wash and repaint containers.
