About The Position

Perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the City cemetery. This role involves operating maintenance equipment, performing building maintenance, assisting with grave openings and closings, and general groundskeeping.

Requirements

Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and equipment operations.
Knowledge of purposes and uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, power tools and hand tools including motorized pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge of uses and purposes of general maintenance tools and equipment.
Knowledge of proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Ability to perform tasks in a variety of operation and maintenance activities.
Ability to perform difficult manual labor tasks including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.
Ability to interpret Cemetery records and maps regarding the location and layout of various cemetery lots.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Ability to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Ability to provide functional and technical supervision to less experienced personnel.
Ability to work effectively in the absence of close supervision.
Ability to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and other equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to assist in the training and supervision of others in the safe operation of equipment and performance of functions.
One to two years of experience comparable to that of maintenance positions within the described work areas.
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurability as determined by the City’s insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

Operate maintenance equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, backhoe and loaders for a variety of maintenance operations.
Assist in snow removal activities.
Utilize a variety of hand and power tools; assist in routine maintenance of such equipment.
Perform routine preventive maintenance on tools and equipment as assigned.
Utilize proper safety precautions in all work performed.
Perform maintenance duties of cemetery buildings.
Perform basic plumbing duties on the cemetery water systems.
Perform basic carpentry work and painting for building and maintaining cemetery facilities and equipment.
Open and close graves as necessary; assist in funeral preparations; assist public in locating graves.
Perform a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of cemetery's irrigation systems.
Water, mow, weed, trim, sod, renovate and fertilize lawns; prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers and shrubs; trim trees.
May assist in other sections of the Department as necessary.
Perform related duties as assigned.
