The Maintenance Worker 1/2 performs a variety of entry level maintenance work and equipment operation in assigned areas in the maintenance of city streets, sewers, drainage systems, and related structures. This role operates light, medium, and trains on some heavy construction equipment, and may work independently or in a team situation. Responsibilities include assisting with the installation and repair of sewer pipe, assisting with TV inspections of sanitary and stormwater lines, cleaning wastewater grit channels, clarifiers, and various tankage, assisting with infiltration and inflow monitoring and smoke testing operations, cleaning and maintaining catch basins, wastewater channels, storm sewer, and wastewater lines with construction equipment, and assisting the jet rodder/vactor operator with cleaning wastewater and stormwater lines. The position requires maintaining an active telephone number and being available for call-outs as required. Employees hired into the entry-level Maintenance Worker 1 position are assigned to a specific Public Works Maintenance crew and must participate in a competency training program designed to take 18-24 months to complete. After 18 months, an employee's position is eligible to flex to the semi-skilled Maintenance Worker 2 level upon completion of proficiency in skill areas and meeting the minimum experience requirement of three years in public works maintenance, construction, or repair. For those hired without a Commercial Driver’s License, priority may be placed on obtaining that license before beginning the proficiency training program.
