About The Position

To support the Training Manager in implementing the apprenticeship program and participating in the current training of bus maintenance personnel in the proper service, repair, and maintenance of diesel and battery-powered buses, and non-revenue vehicles. Instructs proper use and maintenance care of vehicle test equipment, tools, and shop equipment. Accurately documents all apprenticeship and maintenance employee training records.

Requirements

  • An associate degree in diesel/automotive technology or related field preferred, OR equivalent combination of education and four (4) or more years of relevant maintenance experience. Transit industry experience preferred.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License is required.
  • Proficiency in using a computer and related technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and audio/visual systems.
  • Knowledge of engines, automatic transmissions, differentials, and other components used in the heavy vehicle and transit maintenance industry.
  • Familiarity with maintenance training delivery and curriculum development.
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and phones.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.  Must be able to exchange accurate information and follow directions.
  • Ability to interact with others, including groups, both in person and through phone, e-mail, and written correspondence.
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, and fractions), including the ability to apply principles of algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively and adapt to frequent changes in workload.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with work checked on a regular basis.
  • Ability to access confined spaces, including service pits and areas underneath vehicles, to observe and instruct on maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to move and transport vehicle repair parts and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perceive visual and auditory information necessary for demonstrating maintenance procedures, observing trainee performance, and ensuring safety compliance.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with trainees in classroom and shop environments.
  • Ability to use tools to perform electrical and mechanical maintenance work, including removing and installing small parts and components and regularly adjusting, assembling, testing, and operating equipment (Some tools will be provided).
  • The position requires exposure to heavy machinery/equipment, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, fumes/odors, some hazardous materials, dust, and dirt.
  • Ability to access elevated and ground-level work areas on and around vehicles to demonstrate and observe maintenance techniques.
  • Position may require completion of a job-related physical abilities assessment to ensure capability to perform essential maintenance demonstration and observation functions.
  • Position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including nights and/or weekends, to support near24/7 maintenance training operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the training compliance with the requirements of maintenance trades on high voltage, electrical, HVAC, and mechanicals on all vehicles, and equipment.
  • Provide instruction to Pre-Apprentice, Apprentice, and Classified-Level Mechanics on the proper and safe techniques and procedures for the repair and maintenance of all components.
  • Collaborate with Service Managers and Supervisors in developing future apprenticeship and re-training programs.
  • Plan, schedule, prioritize, and organize the work of bus maintenance training personnel for optimal effectiveness and efficiency of production while meeting established standards and deadlines.
  • Provide effective training to maintenance personnel in bus maintenance practices, theory, and skill, incorporating new methods, technologies, and approaches as appropriate.
  • Help with assessments and workplace competency of transit equipment repair.
  • Assist, write, edit, and produce materials for training instruction.
  • Develop training schedules and facilitate training as per skills training matrix for current employees and new hires, and for any retraining/refresher training needs identified; maintain training and competency records in the HR system.
  • Ensure all operating standards/procedures are accurate and fully communicated to all maintenance employees.
  • Observe and evaluate the performance of Trainees in the classroom, and on the job; administer tests, recommend appropriate scheduling, and additional training to the Training Manager.
  • Coordinate with IndyGo Human Resources Learning and Development team regarding any additional employee training needs.
  • Ensure department training guide and qualification record system are updated.
  • Establish and maintain a productive and motivational training environment in and out of the classroom and cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Coordinate with both the Director of Preventative Maintenance and the Director of Fleet Services.
  • Participate and engage with external resources to develop a relationship with industry trades and schools to build the recruitment of candidates.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
