About The Position

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the National Park Service at Haleakalā National Park, is recruiting two (2) Kīpahulu Maintenance Technicians to participate in maintenance support in the Kīpahulu District of the park. Maintenance Technicians hired under this agreement will perform vegetation control around Kīpahulu District trails, campground and visitor center area. This maintenance support will ensure that high use trails, campground and Visitor Center areas are kept in good condition, fire risk is mitigated, and visitors are able to view the natural and cultural resources of Kīpahulu District.

Requirements

  • Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Technician position without more than normal supervision.
  • Operate ride on mowing equipment.
  • Operate string trimmers and hedge trimmers.
  • Operate motor vehicles with trailers.
  • Apply herbicides for control of nonnative, invasive plants.
  • Performs basic upkeep and maintenance of trails, grounds, and buildings.
  • Must be able to regularly carry at least 35 lbs with no assistance.
  • Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record.
  • Must meet PLC qualifications.
  • Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to National human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must meet age requirements for Public Land Corps Hiring Authority.

Nice To Haves

  • Good attitude, team player and ability to accept feedback and follow instruction.
  • Experience with Hawaiian dry stack masonry.
  • Experience with equipment assembly, installation, repair, and operation, per given instructions.
  • Nursery or greenhouse experience.

Responsibilities

  • Invasive, non-native, and weedy vegetation will be cleared from around archeological sites, trails, and visitor use areas such as campground and Visitor Center areas.
  • Native and Polynesian vegetation will be maintained in healthy condition and to protect nearby archeological sites and park facilities and infrastructure.
  • Assist park Trail crews with maintenance of Kūloa Point Trail and Pīpīwai Trail in the Kīpahulu District.
  • Assist with maintenance on park buildings, such as painting or minor repairs.
  • Assist park Resource Management staff with stabilization of archeological sites in the Kīpahulu Historic District.
