Maintenance Technician - Level 4/5

SpaceX•Starbase, TX, TX

About The Position

SpaceX is seeking a Maintenance Technician to install and maintain the Starship test stand’s electrical, mechanical, and fluid systems in preparation for test operations. These systems include hydraulics, high-pressure nitrogen and helium, and cryogenic systems. The position supports vehicle integration, launch-pad and site maintenance, preventative maintenance, general facilities work, and other work needed to keep the launch site operational. The technician works with engineers and other technicians to ensure systems operate to a high standard, troubleshoots system issues, and performs work safely and accurately. The role also involves creating and maintaining work orders and instructions, operating heavy equipment, and handling large or fragile assemblies. The successful candidate takes initiative, remains composed, contributes to a positive work environment, and is conscientious about work quality. They are expected to produce high-quality work promptly, suggest improvements, and look for ways to streamline processes and reduce costs. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding overtime. Overtime, weekend work, and shift rotations may be required as site needs change. Travel to other SpaceX facilities may be required, up to 25%.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • At least 7 years of experience performing maintenance or installation work on mechanical and low-voltage control systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as operational needs require, and to support shift rotations.
  • Ability to travel to other SpaceX facilities when needed, up to 25%.
  • Physical dexterity for work in tight quarters.
  • Ability to work in extreme outdoor environments, including heat, cold, and rain, and in environments with fumes, odors, and noise.
  • Ability to work in temperatures over 80 degrees for six hours or more per day.
  • Ability to safely work at heights up to 500 feet and in confined spaces, operate heavy equipment and machinery, and perform the stated physical demands.
  • Eligibility to meet U.S. Government export-control requirements: U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • NCCER Instrumentation certification.
  • Experience working on a rocket launch pad and directly supporting launch operations.
  • Military aviation experience as a propulsion or airframe technician.
  • Experience using heavy equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, and man lifts.
  • Experience following detailed schematics and fabricating fluid panels from them.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and cryogenic systems and operations.
  • Experience explaining differences between hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal test setups and between sensors such as load cells, differential pressure transducers, and thermocouples.
  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting complex controls, fluid, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience routing tubes in the field to a high level of accuracy.
  • Experience safely rigging and moving items under 20,000 pounds.
  • Experience operating and building flush carts, proof carts, and leak-check carts.
  • Experience working in a clean-room environment.
  • Familiarity with calibrated measurement devices, including load cells, multimeters, calipers, torque wrenches, depth gauges, and micrometers.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and install fluid system components from schematics or engineering drawings, including ball valves, check valves, pressure regulators, and pressure gauges.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues during activation of controls, fluid, and mechanical systems.
  • Work with technicians and engineers to ensure systems operate with a high level of quality in support of launch operations.
  • Operate heavy machinery, including forklifts and aerial platforms.
  • Perform hands-on work with large and small fragile assemblies.
  • Perform maintenance for vehicle integration, pad maintenance, site preventative maintenance, general facilities, corrosion control, and other work needed to maintain an operational launch site.
  • Create, maintain, and edit written work orders and instructions.
  • Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) and fluid-system configuration procedures, completing associated physical and administrative actions safely and accurately.
  • Monitor and interpret critical instrumentation data to assess fluid-system health and performance.
