Norman Rockwell Museum is a drug-free workplace. Maintenance Technician Level 1 is under general supervision of the Director of Facilities and Safety. The person in this position performs a variety of routine building and grounds maintenance including a variety of tasks that require knowledge of safe work practices.

Requirements

  • 1 to 2+ years of work experience in general building maintenance
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Experience using hand and power tools (such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, wrenches, precision measures, electronic/electronic testing devices), and ability to properly use specialized equipment, including tools used in electrical, plumbing or general carpentry
  • Experience with outdoor power equipment including lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, and snowblowers
  • Ability to operate large equipment - Tractor
  • Motivated to learn higher-level building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Works independently on routine and complicated tasks and follows through reliably.
  • Customer service skills to act responsively to inquiries and requests; and escalate as needed
  • Effective communication skills to build strong working relationships with staff, customers, and facilities leadership
  • Warm, friendly, and professional manner; strong customer-service orientation.
  • Positive team player with the ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Ability to work independently; demonstrate initiative in advance needs and planning
  • Proficient computer skills; able to communicate electronically and learn/operate building systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine building care: scrubbing, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, window washing, and trash removal.
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs of galleries, public spaces, and mechanical rooms.
  • Complete basic repairs: lightbulb changes, touch-up painting, tightening hardware, minor carpentry, and simple plumbing fixes.
  • Assist with equipment checks and water filter changes.
  • Maintain organization and inventory of supply and storage rooms.
  • Maintain lawns and outdoor areas; assist with snow removal.
  • Support setups and breakdowns for events, programs, and exhibit installs/de-installs (moving cases, minor fabrication, tools).
  • Perform security-related tasks: building openings/closings, monitoring unoccupied buildings, escorting contractors, responding to alarms, and providing event security presence. Identify and turn on/off alarms.
  • Monitor for safety hazards and report issues promptly.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and safe-work practices, including basic museum safety standards (humidity awareness, supervised artwork handling, ladder safety, lockout/tagout awareness).
  • Access to technology systems for basic operating functions including cameras and alarm system (Connect One).
  • Complete work orders using the CMMS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
